Extruder noise on infill
I assembled my mini plus yesterday and i'm using it since this morning. The first two prints seem to come out fine.
Only problem is the sound my extruder makes. When printing borders it sounds normal, but when it has to print infill the extruder makes a lot of noise and starts shaking.
You can hear the noise and see the shaking at 0.07.

RE: Extruder noise on infill
@JoanTabb thanks for adding a link of the video. 🙂
I've reassembled the extruder and it makes a bit less sound now. The grinding sound is still there though.
After watching it print for an hour I noticed the sound only happens when the extruder is retracting. The tension on the idler screw doesn't make any difference.
Any ideas?

@ezra
Post a video clip so we can hear the noise

RE: Extruder noise on infill
The video is mention in my first post, but here it is again: https://forum.prusa3d.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/PXL_20210515_104240608.LS_.mp4
You can hear a grinding sound at the start, and again at 7 seconds. Both times the extruder retracts the filament.
After 7 seconds the printer starts an infill with a lot of small retraction.
RE: Extruder noise on infill
It's probably worth speaking to Prusa Support. I believe this could be a defective extruder gear - it sounds like there is a bit too much slop, hence the grinding sound.
RE: Extruder noise on infill
After support guiding me in the right direction (the filament spur is hitting something that causes the sound) I disassembled the extruder again and have been rebuilding it while loading and purging (without the filament) after every step in the assembly and discovered the noise starts when I close the extruder.
Apparently the screw holes of the front and rear of the extruder don't properly align. For a short term solution I closed the extruder realigning it (with misaligned screw holes (this takes some force). A long term solution would be replacing the extruder front and rear.
@ Etzeitet Thanks for your response. I was just typing my answer during your respons. It was indeed something with the gears. 🙂
I posted the solution if someone in the future has the same problem and comes across this topic.
RE: Extruder noise on infill
Try a different infill pattern. Some cross extrusion at the same level and make a slight scratching noise as they do so. If the noise is present with all patterns then it will be worth investigating the retractions.
