RE: Strange extrusion problem using Bondtech extruder and heat break on Prusa Mini

Went back to stock and Bondtech a few times to test prints. V6 is near stock, but ptfe is further away from nozzle.

RE: Strange extrusion problem using Bondtech extruder and heat break on Prusa Mini

Hello everyone,

since I had the same problem in the last few days, I would like to share with you all my experience and how I solved the problem.... at least now it seems to work again as expected.

Equipment:

  • Prusa MINI+
  • Firmware 4.3.4
  • Extensions / Upgrades:
    • Bondtech Heatbreak and Bondtech Dual Extruder
    • Nozzle: Olsson Ruby 0.4mm (Prusa Store)
  • DIY Upgrades
    • Mini Base (available at Prusa Printables)
    • Prusa Mini Detachable Cooling Duct Assembly V2 (thingiverse)

I also tried everything possible, including cleaning ("Cold Pull" or "Atomic Pull"), disassembling the extruder, and reassembling it. Again and again it seemed to work at first, but at some point, sometimes earlier, sometimes later, I heard the already described click and from that point on everything went wrong. While reading your post, I already wondered what this clicking could be and since I couldn't even sleep because of it and didn't go to bed until I found the error, I went in search of this strange clicking. Of course, it's obviously from the extruder trying to feed the material, but experiencing too much resistance and therefore needing too much force than expected. Unfortunately, when I first disassembled it, I didn't notice that in the Bondtech extruder, the small gear that ultimately feeds the filament was on the gearbox, and since it is guided, it can't be completely out of position, but the small screw that holds it in place wasn't tightened well or came loose over time.

I think that this is why sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, or why the error always occurred at a different time (even at the same print). I think that's where the "clicking" comes from, because the 0.5-1.0mm clearance is just enough to feed, but due to the pulling in and out of the filament during the printing process, the gears sometimes skip a gear. After the click, the extruder may have continued to work at a different position than it should be and therefore much more filament came out at the next seam, but much too little at the previous one. Over time, this is so high that you have to stop the whole thing, because you know that it can be done better and more beautifully.

I hope to have helped, maybe that solves with one or the other this nerve-racking problem 😉

Greetings,
René

RE: Strange extrusion problem using Bondtech extruder and heat break on Prusa Mini

Just wanted to check in and update new readers who might have the same issue I had.
I've had the new setup (Bondtech extruder, Phaetus dragon (standard) hotend, cht nozzle) for just around 4 months now.
It's given me a lot of confidence in the little machine. I've almost entirely stopped using my CR10 in favor of the Mini.

I print almost exclusivly PLA of different brands, but rarely have problems. When I do have problems it's almost always my own falut for cranking the speed up to 200mm/s @0.25 layer heights or something similar.
Issues 4 months ago: The print looks like garbage, inconsistencies everywhere no matter what I do.
Issues today: I get belt slip at over 10k Accelerations bc of the printed hotend mount (printed in High temp PLA on my CR10, no ohter issues), and under extrusion when I go above 30mm³/s.

I had exactly the same issue with the bondtech heatbreak (I am also using bondtech extruder) and what fixed it for me was a very non-standard hotend assembly... I letf more space between the nozzle end and beatblock (1,5mm instead of 0,5) and it allowed the heatbreak to get a bit deeper into the heatblock. Now the print quality is perfect.

Does this issue seem to be more related to the Bondtech heat-break or the Bondtech extruder?

Yes, this IS only related to the Bondtech heat-break and has nothing to do with the Bondtech extruder.

Exact explanation for the problem is here: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/611112/
