Really struggling getting Octoprint working on my Prusa Mini
Here is where I stand.
1) Purchased a RPi 4
2) Installed Octoprint on it
3) Was able to modify the wifi network and it works fine. I can get to Octoprint via my browser
4) I plug the cable from the Mini USB to the USB on the RPi. When I go to connect, I don't see any port options. Only option for port I see is "Auto". I have tried every baud rate and still no connection.

The problem with that article is it bounces back and forth between RPi Zero and RPi W. I can only assume W in this article is referring to the various other versions of the RPi? Either way, I think I might have a port problem on the RPi?
Any advice on this would be appreciated. I also read somewhere the Prusa Mini doesn't work with Octoprint. Based on some of the threads in here, that is a bad rumor, right?

Hi Dave,
Sounds like you have Octoprint running OK and can navigate to the Octoprint page in a web browser. With the usb cable plugged in to your raspberry Pi and the micro usb port on the prusa mini, printer turned on if you leave it as auto and click connect it doesn't connect?
Have you tried a different USB cable? You'd be surprised how many are just charging cable (no data pins connected). Can you confirm you have a data usb cable (try another device with a pc for example?). That would be my first check. To connect to the mini i leave leave baud rate and serial port on auto and all works fine.

You know you may be on to something. I tried a second cable, but it is very possible they are charging only. I am looking on Amazon and can't get 100% feel if this could be the right one. Thoughts? The description does talk about data transfer rates.

Like you say it is hard to tell 100% from the one you linked, The one I have linked (UK site) says "Ideal for charging Android phones and tablets or connecting PC peripherals such as hard drives, printers, and more" if you find one with something along those line you should be good to go, also check out the reviews/questions on the product as someone may have been needing a data cable rather than just charging.

My Raspberry 3B+ runs fine with this configuration:
Description: Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Kernel: 5.4.83-v7+
Octoprint: 1.4.2
octopi: 0.17.0
The Pi is connected via one of the 4 USB-A ports to the Micro-USB of the buddyboard. Default Baud is 115200.

Okay folks. It was the cable. Found a third cable laying around and it must have been data friendly. Thanks for your help all!
Now I need to understand how to get to this from outside my home. That was the whole reason I got this. I want to be able to remotely turn off a printer for safety reasons.

You need additional things for that. Like a controllable switch. You can change temperature etc in octoprint, but turning the printer off is not possible without something external. You don't even need octoprint if that's really all you want to do. Exposing things to the internet is not something you should do without a good reason.
You could get a smartplug that you can control with your phone.

You’ll need to setup VPN for your home network so you can reach OctoPrint from outside.

The OctoPrint documentation has a page on this very topic. If you don't want to do a complicated install yourself, that page references OctoEverywhere. There is also the OctoPrint Anywhere plugin from the developer of Spaghetti Detector, though it sounds like it is being deprecated. If you're not confident in your ability to configure and secure an installation, these are a good way to go.

Thanks tons. I did end up working thru the OctoEverywhere option. Seems to work okay. When you mention deprecated. What did you mean by that?

When something is deprecated, it usually means it is being phased out/removed.
In the case of OctoPrint Anywhere, it has been superseded by Spaghetti Detective. Since the developer doesn't want to maintain two different applications/plugins, the older OPA is eventually going away.
I did come across this blog post that says OPA will be available as subscription-only: https://www.getanywhere.io/docs/blog/2020/01/31/moving-forward
It would seem a lot of people need features not available in Spaghetti Detective.

Kinnda ironic that you were unintentionally using a data only cable when a lot of people disconnect the 5v rail og the USB socket to avoid back powering the printer.
