RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

It definitely was. This is AFTER loosening everything and starting again, including the center screw (it was free floating at one point)

yea, it's been a journey of odd.

There is obviously some kind of bug in my code. I haven't had the time to debug it yet. It appears that your bed is just so out of wack (over 0.6 mm) that the script can't handle it. I'll try to fix it next month. In the meantime, I suggest you visually level your bed and as much as possible and try again.

You can also test here, perhaps you will get some different results: https://bbbenji.github.io/PMSBLM/beta/

Appreciate the assist. Happy to help with your code if I can provide data.

Got it. not 100% perfect but dang close.

Ended up returning to stock bed supports and from there loosening the screws connecting the z axis to the y.  Much experimentation later, I found my scrapper inserted here gave this result.

Gonna order some brass shim stock and get it in there. My calipers show the thickness I need is about 0.01 inch.

No other adjustments I tried to square the x-axis did the job, job this seems to have. Don't know why but I'll take it.

This adjustment can be done entirely without shims.

How to do the XZ correction is described here.

That really looks bad!

I still think there is something wrong here with the ABL, it should be compensating properly for a bed that isn't flat. You should be getting a consistent amount of squish across the entire bed.

Which I tried, many times and didn't get a good result. This got an almost passable result. My guess is the metal plater joining the z to the y is some how bent. Considering I drove 1600 miles in a move not long before this happened it's not impossible.

I'll also consider ordering a replacement part in the long term, of course. But 18 dollars shipping for a 5 dollar part... I'll wait till I have more to get.

To be fair the z-axis wasn't tightened down at this time so things could have moved.

However I agree the ABL may not be working right, but it's a brand new mainboard, so I don't know how. Things were bad with the old on as well. As far as I can tell the superpinda works, and similar readings happened with a minda probe too. If you look at my other thread, this is WAY better than it had been...

Thanks for the replies, all.

Well, I got the replacement pinda probe in - turned out mine was failing intermittently.

Still got that peak/valley in the bed though. Only thing I can assume is the heatbed is warped somehow, as the bed visualizer result is the same regardless of which steel sheet I use.

Any ideas where I could look for how to fix a whacky warped bed?

Putting the bed visualizer aside, when you do a first layer calibration is that looking okay now?

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

Because of the peak and valley warp, there's like a 0.5 mm difference from the lowest valley (probe point up and left from center) to the highest peak (probe point down and right of center) so it struggles to sitck well in the center, but over all it's much, much better. I'd get a picture but I actually have a print running, though only using a section of the bed. Seems to be fine though so far.

Can't begin to guess how the bed is warped though. I even took the center screw out entirely and tried leveling and printing like that. It showed improvement but didn't fully fix it. Hmm. Oh, and this is all with the silicon mod in place, of course. Tried loosening the screws and starting over several times. The perimeter is almost spot on perfect, but the center is doing a fine impression of the rocky mountains.

ugh, it's nearing 1 am. Apologies if the above is nonsensical. I swear I'm just gonna buy an aluminium plate and slap it on the heated bed and the steel sheet on top fo that. 0.5 mm warp THAT ya dang thing. ...ok I'm going to bed. I'm talking to my printer.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I would be tempted to remove the mod and just make sure it's not warped. Also might be worth just fixing the centre screw (not super tight, just hand tight), and then heat soaking the bed at 100C for 30 minutes (don't leave it unattended!) to see if that straightens it out.

If it was always warped, that's a defect, but if it warped as a result of the mod then it sounds like it was introduced there during the tightening process.

RE:

Tried without the mod - problem remained. here's pictures of current state - mod installed - and actual first layer.

I'll try the soak at 100C. interesting idea.

What firmware version are you running? Because it still doesn't look like it's compensating for the bed.

Here's a shot from after the 30 mins at 100c soak then allowed to cool. Different but still warped.

firmware on buddy board is 4.3.4 bootloader is 1.1.0 and buddy board is 1.0.7 version.

Haven't updated it since I got the new one.

I would update and see if that helps, it won't fix your warped bed but it might fix your ABL issues.

Updated, but I don't have time for more messing with it tonight.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

So get this - I actually did order a plate of precision ground aluminum plate. took ages to heat up but it is flat. The bed couldn't possibly still be warped with THAT on there between the heating element and the steel sheet, right?

Well, no. It can't. But if there's a crap ton of play in your rails in the middle, then it could LOOK warped.

The peak is always where it's moving to the left, and the valley is always where it's moving to the right. I tried wiggling the hot end assembly, it's fine at the ends, left or right. But closer to the middle, even by 10 mm, it wobbles freely. Since I doubt the steel rod wore that much I'm gonna guess the BEARINGS I REPLACED at the same time as the x-axis carriage are to blame. Using my calipers - yea, they're more like 8.4 mm instead of 8.

And of course, I don't have the originals anymore. I am such an idiot.

I don't think you should be so harsh on yourself, it sounds like you may have got a step closer to fixing the problem!

Thank you. Yes, you're right. I ordered what should be some good ones off amazon. I'll know in the morning.
