RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

I ended up purchasing a box of 50 or so from McMaster-Carr, hopefully I'll find other projects to use them for.

Anyone know of a good US-based supplier for the 16mm M3 Torx screws, or a hex screw that is compatible with this mod? The screws in the amazon link in the GitHub repo are not currently available.

I had a lot of issues when printing larger things because my bed was crazy warped. I think I got it pretty well now 🙂

Hi. Just started on the bed leveling journey. I have a question; when running the G29 code, do you run it on the heat bed, or with the print steel sheet on? I get different values with the smooth sheet and the satin sheet...

I always put the smooth sheet on. I don't think it matters as long as you do all the adjustments with the same sheet, and I'd choose the one you print with the most.

The sensors on Prusa machines are (I believe) designed to test distance from metal, so the heater bed PCB will be inconsistent in comparison to the steel sheet on top.

Put the sheet on first.

In the menu you can set the type of sheet you have put on and save the z-offsets for each specific sheet. So if you switch between the sheets, all you gotta do is change the sheet type and the printer adjusts the offset accordingly.

yep, the smooth and satin sheets (and I'd assume the textured, but I don't have that one) are different thicknesses so have different results for z height.

Hey there,

i'm very interested in this silicone mod. i've  installed the NylocMod a Year ago but i wanted to made it better. so when looking around Prusa Forum i found this thing. i have a MK3S+ and wanted to know, if i can add this silicone mod to my printer too. will there be diffrent steps? other screws or something? Or is it impossible?

Thanks 😉

So I have been printing with the stock Mini for a while and having generally ok results so I decided to do this mod. Got it done but am seeing odd issues with the results from running the G29 command. I had to run it 5 times before I got a usable result. Does this look like a HW issue or am I missing something?

Thats an interesting question.

I have done the mod here to.

And i got the same strange results with the latest firmware.

I am seeing some oddities in prints also. When I do get the proper output it seems to vary so thats what makes me wonder if it is hardware.

Same here, actually. Just absolutely cannot get a level bed. The right side is always showing as too high, when its printing actually looks too low. I was obsessively trying to fix it for a few weeks after installing a new x-axis carriage for better cooling. I squared the frame multiple times, checked the x-axis rods themselves, replaced the x-axis end cap and belt... I've literally given up even using a third of the bed at this point.

Something weird is going on.

Maybe a firmware change? I don't know.

I initially had an issue with frame squareness and x axis twist. Got that sorted and now I just have to track down this oddity with the mesh.

I have tested 3D printed 3mm locking nut. It works well 😎

Update on my mess: I changed out the mainboard entirely. Still not able to get a level bed, whether using this silicon mod or not.

but also, uh, the converter reports this as flat, despite the peaks and valleys being 0.6mm apart. wtf?!

Maybe they fixed the calculator, but last time I used it you had to remove the Recv: part for it to work

I installed the https://github.com/jeffeb3/OctoPrint-TerminalMessaging plugin which removed the Recv: prefix because I'm lazy and didn't want to do it manually.

Well, on testing, the "Recv:" being removed or present makes no difference.

I've spent the last few hours trying to level just by adjusting the screws here. I think I'm making progress. It seems like there might have been something incorrectly set in my octoprint causing, basically, the bed to be rotated. Maybe? I don't know. Honestly made so many changes I think my eyes are gonna fall out. Break time.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

for documentation and desperations sake, here's a post from my other thread seeking help to show what I'm seeing:
https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/postid/654551/

low on the left, really low at the 75% line to the point it doesn't even extrude, then ok until the right, where it's now too high by just a bit.

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

That is so strange! What confuses me is the ABL is clearly wrong, like it's reading inverted and making the nozzle go lower when it should be going higher, and vice versa.

Something seems very wrong that has nothing to do with the bed levelling mod.

But also I think you may have the centre screw too tight for the mod and would consider loosening everything a lot and then starting again. It seems like your bed is being warped (like a sine wave)

RE: Prusa Mini Silicone Bed Leveling Mod

There is obviously some kind of bug in my code. I haven't had the time to debug it yet. It appears that your bed is just so out of wack (over 0.6 mm) that the script can't handle it. I'll try to fix it next month. In the meantime, I suggest you visually level your bed and as much as possible and try again.

You can also test here, perhaps you will get some different results: https://bbbenji.github.io/PMSBLM/beta/
