Getting 5V from the buddy board

It is pretty dark wher my prusa mini is. So I wanted to add a little led to the printbed to see the print. To power it I need a 5v power source on the buddy board!

On this picture of the Buddy board I see two Expansion ports. I know that the black one is for an esp upgrade. But fo what is the white port?

And my other question is: Can I use the 5v and gnd pins of the esp expansion port to power an led, without damaging the board and if yes what is the max current I can draw?

If no is there any other solution?

Thanks

What makes you think there is 5V on the ESP connector? According to the schematic, there is 3.3V on that connector. I don't what the white port is for, but that also has 3.3V.

Connectors with 5V are the two fans, MINDA and filament sensor. You could splice off one of those. I wouldn't like to speculate on max current, I don't know what design parameters Prusa used for the PCB, the two fans probably draw about 400mA.

I think I would add my own DC converter and avoid any risk of overloading the Buddy board. How much does your LED need?

That would be my option, if you want to take a look at the schematic it is here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Buddy-board-MINI-PCB/blob/master/rev.1.0.0/BUDDY_v1.0.0.pdf 5V rail uses a LM25011MY rated for 2A https://www.avnet.com/shop/us/products/texas-instruments/lm25011my-nopb-3074457345627004464 but as said I would build my own power supply  for the leds

Ok, I declined to speculate, but "where angels fear to tread"... googling the datasheet is really not sufficient to give sound advice.

The LM25011MY itself has a MAX rating of 2A, but that doesn't mean it has sufficient cooling to be used at 2A on this particular board. Also, I checked the PCB layout in KiCad and the 5V traces on the PCB are NOT rated at 2A.

In case you are not using both USB ports you could also just use one of those. Either buy a little USB lamp or cut open a USB cable and wire up your own. Of course it's not as pretty but way less intrusive than getting your power somewhere directly from the board.

I totally agree 🙂 since we also not know the total budget already there on the 5 Volt rail and therefore not know for sure  if it it feasible to add the leds.

TL;DR: IMHO build your own 5 Volt supply for the leds

@oxygen

Okay thanks for all of your replys!

The led is a 1W 3.3V Led. (I didnt assume that there is an 3.3V port, so I would have used an resistor)

But I dont want to take any risk and I have an dc-dc converter lying around.

Now my question is where on the board is a good 24V contact where i can get power for the led?

I have LED strip that plugs into USB, I just power it from nearest USB charger.
