Moons 0.9 motors - Use on MK3.9?
Hello,
I have a heavily modified modified MK3s. It has a bear frame, LGX extruder, mosquito hotend, the works.
After reading a post about VFA and how to mitigate the issue, I bought some Moons 0.9 stepper motors. I've modified the original firmware to allow me to use the motors and they work great! I'm over the moon (heh) about the MK4 coming out and already purchased the MK3 -> MK4 upgrade. You can probably already guess my question but could I have just bought the 3.9 upgrade and use my own motors? I could have saved $80! Are there any other differences? I wonder if a Prusa rep could reply and let me know if the motors are compatible!
Cheers!
RE: Moons 0.9 motors - Use on MK3.9?
The answer is no. It fails the x and y calibration because it does not detect that it hit the ends. They are probably too high torque! I am debating modifying the firmware but I don't really want to give up my warranty.

Gabe, did you eve make any progress on this? I'm in the same boat and had the same question.
RE: Moons 0.9 motors - Use on MK3.9?
Hey @kenzo82! So the current for the 0.9 motors is 1.68A. I bought these motors, from Printed Solid and they work great. They effectively made my Prusa mk3.9 into a 4. I imagine any high torque 1.68A 0.9 motors would work. I had to change the pinout of the motors, but it wasn't much of a hassle. I could have used the supplied cables, but I didn't want to rewire everything so I compared the supplied cable pins with the ones I had and simply re-pinned them to match.
Let me know how it goes and if you need any help!

Awesome.
Did you have to modify the firmware in order to get the 0.9 LDO to work with the Mk3.9?
How does the quality of prints (VFAs) compare to the Moon ones you had previously on your Bear MK3?
Any homing issues or crash or layershift issues?
Thanks
RE: Moons 0.9 motors - Use on MK3.9?
It's been really solid. No firmware changes and the auto-calibrate will detect the 0.9 motors.
Sadly, I have not done a comparison of the VFAs as I would have to load up old g-code or at least print at the same speed as I did with the MK3, but I am very pleased with the printer thus far! If I wanted to print figures or detail I would slow it down a lot as you're always going to get more artifacts at crazy high speeds
RE:
Since the Mk3 and Mk4 share the same Trinimic 2130 drivers, I would have thought the LDO at 1.68 amp would overheat the driver. I believe the max current for the tmc2130 is 1.2amps. Are your drivers very hot?
RE: Moons 0.9 motors - Use on MK3.9?
Nope, they are good. I got confirmation that they are 1.68A 0.9 motors and they work great
