Prusa Enclosure and MMU2 : My setup

Hi everyone 🙂

This is my very first post on Prusa forums, I hope you'll like it.

I am using my MMU2 with a Prusa enclosure and I thought some people might be interested in my setup.

The main idea and goal was : I wanted to put the MMU2 outside of the enclosure for easy access. So I did.

As you can see, I removed the feet to make it lay flat, sitting on foam pads to reduce noise.

Doing so, you might notice the wires of the MMU2 to the Einsy board are waaaay too short. No problem : I used Dupont cables to extend them, and make them pass through the hole in the back of the enclosure :

And final trick : the PTFE tube from the MMU2 to the extruder is actually the one of the enclosure 🙂

All I had to do was to calibrate the MMU2 for this longer PTFE tube, and it was all done. And guess what ? Thanks to this convenient setup, I have been finally able to print with the MMU ! So glad ! 🙂

Some people on facebook groups asked me to share about my setup, so I'm going to send them the link to this post.

Let me know if you have questions, I'll be happy to share !

I love this.  This is where I was at with my MMU2S and trying to figure out how to setup the unit.  I never thought to go sideways with the case like that.  My only question is how do you manage the power cables?  I can see how the Dupont can connect to the MMU2S directly but how did you mange the connection to the Einsy board?

I like this. For me, access to the MMU2S is crucial because mine generates "MMU needs user attention" messages fairly regularly. If the MMU2S is left in its default position on the i3 it is effectively inaccessible.

I thought about putting the MMU2S buffer on top of the enclosure and leaving the MMU2S itself inside the enclosure, but moving it to the front and suspending it from the top. I was thinking of using something like this. Attaching the buffer to the enclosure seems to make sense, but the best relative position to the MMU2S itself isn't clear to me.

I wonder if Prusa (the company) thought about how to position the MMU2S within the enclosure. All I can remember them saying is that there was room for it. It's rather more complicated than that...

I was actually in chat with support about this a week ago when I built mine. They said there is an official setup that is being finalized. I'll be interested to see their setup, but I like this one.

Well done!

The Dupont connections tend to wobble over time and can affect the function of the MMU2. I would replace the connectors in long-term with higher quality elements.

I'll take a look at this, but it won't be for a while yet.

My one concern from a conceptual point of view is how to deal with five filaments coming in through the hinged lid.

What do you mean by DuPont Connector?

(Dupont 2.54mm 4Pin male female extension connector)

I remade longer MMU2 wires (not extended them, as you can see in the pictures above) and fitted them with original Prusa connectors.

@anthony-3 : I handled the power cables the same way, with dupont jumper cables 🙂

@karl-herbert so far, I didn't get any issue with the jumpers wobbling, but you're right. A more secure connection would be helpful 🙂

This can work well. However, if there should happen any issues, I would check the plug-in connections. I use duponts only for test purposes.

I was going to try this with those dupont wires until I bent one of them.  Around that time I had someone on another post update me that the hinged lid was released.  This is my current setup but to make it work with 5 spools I'm going to see if it works to move my printer away from my desk, turn it 90° and have the spools sitting behind the enclosure and let my gravity spools continue to be of use.  They worked quite well for my Lack V2 so I'm hopeful they will again.

It seems to me that – for the hinged lid approach to work – the five feeds for the filaments need to be in the back or the side of the enclosure (at the top) and not in the lid itself, so the the lid can open and close without impacting the filament feeds.
