Wipe Into this Object paradox

Hi.

I don't know if I misunderstood something here... but it was my understanding that, rather than wipe into a wipe tower, you could wipe into an object.  I'm finding that the printer I'm using doesn't like Prusa Slicer's prime towers... it never really primes right, and never wipes well.  I've had much more luck wiping into another object instead of using a tower.

The paradox here is that every time I've tried this (and I've done at least a dozen attempts now), the object I'm wiping into looks much cleaner (over all better) than the object I'm trying to print!

My last attempt, I used a small project I'm working on which is a two-color name plate for my office door.  It just a black plate, with silver, raised letters and a border.  In order to save filament, I copied my object on the print bed, then cut about 40% off the left and right of it, so only the center two letters of my name remain (with the black background, and small part of the silver border above and below).  The wipe object looks damn near flawless, while the primary object looks sloppy, stringy, and it looks like the top layer didn't print at all.

The steps I am taking are:

1. import the name plate
2. paint the raised text and border, so that the plate itself remains black (extruder 1), and the letters are silver (exturder 2).
3. copy the name plate and make a second instance on the bed
4. Slice off the left 40% of the copied object, and delete it
5. Slice off the right 40% of the copied object, and delete it (so now there is the center 20%, which are the center two letters of my name)
6. Right click the smaller object (the one I just cut), and Select "Wipe Options"
7. On the right panel, (making sure "Wipe options" is selected there) put a check in the "Wipe into this object" box.
8. Slice
9. Print

So, am I doing this wrong?  Do I have some misconception on how this feature is used?
