Tree support access on FDM side of Prusaslicer

On a future release can you add the tree supports to the fdm side? I am not in love with the normal supports just wish we had the option without having to work around it.Using SLA supports on FDM

Prusa staff don't look on these forums often, you need to post it as a feature request over on GitHub, under Issues:

https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues

Just start the title off with [Feature Request]

@3delight

Good to know thank you I'll post it over there.

It works really well, but you have to change your printer profile to SL1 then do your supports, then save as an STL.

More for time saving on my side

@robert-b40

I agree with you, I'd like to see them enabled for FDM printers too.

I've recently swapped from using Prusaslicer to Cura. Although Prusaslicer is unquestionably more visually more attractive one ice feature of Cura is tree supports. Not only are there very effective (eg. printing hollow parts where internal supports cannot be removed), there are also really weird and organic, although more fauna than flora. It also has a search feature for particular settings, rather than floundering around in the PS UI

I will never phantom how can someone think that. From UI perspective Cura seems superior in all regards. Especially thanks to its search functionality.

Anyway just wanted to paste to link to actual PrusaSlicer feature request: https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/1514 . At the time of writing this message sadly its still not implemented.

28 days ago Prusa confirmed this feature on the roadmap!  We just need to wait a bit more

@sgt-freshmeat

Hi there.

You mentioned the roadmap has confirmed tree supports.

I can't seem to find the roadmap you mentioned, are you able to point me in the right direction.

I really want tree supports for FDM, but dont want to go back to CURA.

Thanks.

Tree supports would be nice but first I'd like supports that leave a decent surface.

Glad to hear tree supports are on the way for PrusaSlicer. In the meantime, you can fake SLA supports for FDM printing with PrusaSlicer. Load your model with an SLA printer selected. Add supports, then export the model as an STL with supports. Select your FFF printer profile and load in the updated STL. It's a bit tedious and the results may not be exactly what you're after, but I've tried it and it does work. I ran into this on a random blog post some months back and was quite surprised that this worked.

With a bit of fiddling, you can eliminate those supports under the base. This was just a quick example.

Agreed. Supports are one of the few remaining areas where PrusaSlicer hasn't achieved parity with Cura and ideaMaker. They're ahead on most counts, which is a vast improvement from even a year ago. The nasty bridging layer under supports is still a problem though.

Frankly - I would never even consider using my phone to slice a part.  But it's that sort of logic that allowed attack vectors into our systems where emulation of devices is an accepted practice: that everyone was placed at risk so that a select few didn't have to do configuration to use special features. Can we say short sighted, like cutting off the leg to save a finger nail?

I can barely manage to compose a MSM on my phone, whoever would even consider running a slicer on Android/IoS is in serious need of professional help.
