Testing a maybe stupid idea

Hi

I have a aquarium and has started to look for idea to make a new lid for this. So i had an idea about using the cut/pag function i prusaslicer to just create 1 big part with all the holes etc. So i just wanted to test, so i have fast made a test box in stl file (1600x550x6) and wanted to import this and see what options i had to cut/spilt this and so on, but allready when i import i got my first problem, prusaslicer says opbject is to big and it has been scaled down.

I am using the new 2.7.3 version

So do anybody know if this idea is allready completly dead and if not, how do i undo the scaling done. The option i can find on the net is cant do, only option for undo is "undo import" and not undo scaling.

PrusaSlicer is not a design tool, you need a CAD application.  This would be a fairly straighforward job in  FreeCAD or OpenSCAD, there are plenty of other applications that would handle it.  Export any parts for slicing afterwards.

I am not sure i understand your answer. I am (trying) to use freecad, but my lid is to big to fit on printer and needs to be spilt up in 24 part (8x3). So i wanted to use slicer program for making it much easier to get pegs/dovetails for easy assemble and the option to change part, if the tank get ie. new light, canister, tubes.

Can i in freecad desing 1 pieces and spilt it before export to STL file ?

You could scale it down by a known amount in Freecad, then import it into the slicer and do whatever splitting you need to, then scale each part up by that known amount.

I think it's a project that has legs, it might even become something easily adapted to other sizes of tank. To facilitate this I would approach it from the other end.

Design 3 or 4 'tiles' representing corners, edges and centre parts. Rather than dowels make lugs for bolts to connect them in standardised positions - and I might make provision for a tensioning rod or wire to take some of the stresses.  Then it's a matter of printing enough of each for the assembly and perhaps making a couple of variants with ports for service wires and tubes.

When it comes to upgrades it will be easy to remove and replace standard sections.

Cheerio,

Yes i started to look for some modular option for this and hen i had the idea about just created a full size object and abuse the slicer program to help with the spilting into printable sized object. If go with your suggestion i might need 3 different corners, 3 or 4 diffent part to edge to handle light and so on, so i guess it will be much more work, but yes, i did also think about this.
I was hoping to make "the roof" think enough to provide the needed strengt, but i need to test to make sure.

Thx for the feedback

i was hoping to get help with the part/assembly using some om the option provide by the slicer program, but i will think about if the scaling can help/solve this

I will try make moduls in printable sizes in freecad, hope i found how to make joint, so need test and find various settings

Thanks for input 🙂

In PrusaSlicer create a custom printer (or change a printer profile you already use) and make the build volume as giant as you need.

We will do what we have always done. We will find hope in the impossible.
