Support Z distance and Variable Layer height issues

Just a sanity check here:

When using "Variable layer height" and supports with the setting "Top contact distance" set to some value, should it work properly?

I'm running into an issue, where the supports under an arc are too far away with "top contact distance" of 0.2, since the layer height drops to 0.07 mm, while in other places, it requires 0.2 distance to separate when the layer height is 0.25 mm.

Is this combination of settings just really troublesome?

Is there a way to make the contact distance change with the current layer height?

RE: Support Z distance and Variable Layer height issues

Supports are always variable height even if you use fixed for the object.  Its why the layer count on the slider can be confusing if you have any supports at all.  I think you will find its the arc geometry that is causing it and its normal for PS supports.  Remove the variable layer height and check what the support does, I suspect it wont be any different.  You probably need to play around with the xy distance too as well as z gap.

Since the advent of the new supports (A great thing BTW) you now need to use a combination of "Contact Z distance:" & "XY separation between an object and it's supports:" when working with structures that curve (either inward or outward) the get a proper results. It's not an exact of science as just using "Contact Z distance:" however it offers a much better level of control. The "XY separation between an object and it's supports:" will handle the adjustments towards the sides that the "Contact Z distance:" won't and of course it changes with the angle or slope of the feature.

I was going to write a tutorial on this before I gave up writing tutorials for here.

Edit: I just saw @neophyl's post, so, what he said. but you can keep the VLH.

Good Luck
