Support on the side of a part not wanted

I am loving the Prusa slicer as I use it more. One issue that I have is the support hanging off the side of a part and running down to the table. I don't want the support hanging off the side but have not figured out how to turn it off or cancel it.  I am attempting to attach a .pdf showing the issue.

In general I only want support under the portion that needs support not hanging off the side.

I am learning, thanks for any help. support

Just to let you know your .pdf is a very poor representation of your troubles as its seems to be split in half (two Pages). you should just be able to post a .PNG or .jpeg, however I understand the file server has been a pain in the ass since they (Prusa) has deleted many of our .Zip  files.

That said the problem you are having has long been a problem with slicer, it can be handled with some finesse, it takes a bit of experience but can be made to work without the overhanging support in 2.3.3. If your willing to use a BETA version of the software 2.4 BETA has a snug supports algorithm that is superior to the current support algorithm in 2.3.3, however still is incomplete and needs a bit of finesse to get the result you are stating your looking for.

It's up to you to decide which to use, both require work and experience to use, the other way to go is to model in your own supports and bypass the poor automatic/algorithmic supports altogether.

Good Luck

RE: Support on the side of a part not wanted

Thanks for the info on the .PDF. It helped me solve the problem or not. I did know it was poor, sorry for the poor file. I will work on that, it was only meant to convey the problem.

As far as the advice on needing work and experience to fix the problem I am asking about , I could use some suggestions on what that means.

If anyone has a suggestion on how I can eliminate the support running down the side of a part to the table, thru work or experience I would be interested to hear about how I can get rid of the unwanted support.

Thanks, Ken

Are you able to post a Zipped up .3mf file exported from Prusa slicer? If so we can take a look at the specific problem and attempt to offer help.

RE: Support on the side of a part not wanted

I cant offer any advice on support itself, but if you have control of the design of the part, you could try and design in your built-in support.

A small sub 1mm wide line at the very edge, and another near the V-slot then the bridging will have smaller sections to span and you will have support for the edge.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used Simplify3D to get  the support I need without the support I don't want.

I am learning an it is getting better, the newer beta is different, although it still has a problem with this support situation. The other slicers I use do not seem to default to putting support outside the footprint of the object that is being supported.

I do not think the file is the problem, the configuration of the part and the function of the slicer causes support to be placed outside of the footprint of the object to be supported.  I see it on everything I slice with support in that configuration.

That's probably for the best, I stopped using S3D when I realized they were done, I picked up Slic3r and decided to stick with it. So I now have years of experience with Slicer, and I believe it's one of the best out there, but all have their features that are better the other. I have never liked the automatic supports in any of them, and more often then not I model my own supports for great success.

With that said, since I have spent so much time working in Slicer I have a good understanding of how the supports work, and over the years I have learned tricks to make them do what I want, when I use them, but it's more of an arcane art then a science, the knowledge is not easily passed along via text. It is for me just faster to fix up someones project file then to try and explain how to do it on a forum or even in a tutorial.

I didn't think your file was at fault. Long story short it's easier to show you then to tell you.

I'm glad you found a way.
