Support First Layer Issue

Hi Everyone,

I've been using Prusa Slicer for 3-4 years now and I've never encountered this problem before.

I have the "First Layer Expansion" for support layers set to "0mm" under "Print Settings > Support material (Expert Settings must be turned on). The model has a consistently identical external edge all around the contact surface, but the support settings are still leaving behind a bit of first layer material outside the support region.

How can I get rid of this?

Thank you

RE: Support First Layer Issue

What support settings are you using ?  You only posted a pic of some of them.  Its also highly dependent on your model geometry.

Without full info anything is guesswork.  To diagnose issues we need to see your PS project file.  Go into PS and use File>Save Project As.  That will save a .3mf file.  The 3mf contains the model(s), the 3 profiles you are using as well as any modifiers, painting etc you have done.  Essentially its a snap shot of your environment.  With it we can slice and preview etc just like you can.

Take that 3mf file and ZIP it up.  The attach it to a reply here using the attach file button.  It must be zipped or the forum will just silently not attach the file as the forum only allows a very limited number of file types.

Thank you for your reply.

I will have to use a different model because the ones I used are customer IP. All the support settings are Prusa stock settings except for the base layer expansion which I set to zero. Basically even with this set to zero there's a 0.5mm base support layer leak beyond a 0.8mm wall which is completely touching the build plate.

I'll try to replicate with a different model and share it with you here.

RE:

Ok I found the issue. The wall thickness is actually 0.7mm thick which is causing the support first layer code to leak outside the area of the object cavity (even with first layer expansion set to zero). I will tell my customer to thicken their wall, but the support code shouldn't allow this to happen.

RE: Support First Layer Issue

Its because you have support type set to grid.  Change it to snug Print Settings>Support Material>Options for support material and raft>Style=Snug.  Grid is the oldest type and was ALWAYS growing out a lot.  You could control it to a small extent by changing the pattern spacing value to make it smaller, but not very easily.  That's why snug was added, due to the many issues raised on the PS github.

Organic was added relatively recently but snug works better for this type of model anyway.  Organic is more suited to figures and similar.  Basically since snug was added there really isn't a reason to use Grid anymore.  I have not found a single case where it works better than snug.

The default support settings aren't great anyway.  They are 'ok'.
