Suggestions for Prusaslicer 2.6/2.7

Hi.
Looking forward to the release of 2.6
I noticed you are implementing a "cut and automagically put supportpins on one of the sides " - function. That's incredible. I couldn't see from your vlog exactly, but here is a suggestion for an addition in functionality, unless it's already in the process.

Add option to carve out supportpins on both sides, instead of just one side and add pins on the other. Then you add those pins as a printable object separately to together, wood-crafting-corner-style. The big benefit is that now you can print on both the flat sides if you want.

Regards

RE: Suggestions for Prusaslicer 2.6/2.7

There's a point where you have to begin to ask yourself, as nice as a feature is, is it really something you want to bloat the slicer with or rather assume people use proper 3D design software.

With that said, I actually think features like automagic support pins, or even what you're suggesting, are still on the reasonable side of that line because I can see the value for people who want to cut a large model to fit into the print volume available to them. But it's a fine line, and some recent features such as wrapping text are very close to crossing it, in my mind. Especially as we STILL don't have an officially supported way to draw straight lines (there are unofficial ways) for seams and supports.

Yep, to much bloat not enough fixing problems that already exist. Important things, that really effect work flow, last night when I watched the Prusa live video that mentioned 2.6 alpha, and Joe stated the difficulty of adding text in CADD I almost shot my drink out of my nose. 🤣 😆 🤣 😪 😫 😥

Its already straightforward to place aligned keyways into a cut surface using modifiers.  Making a positive/negative pair is fairly easy too 'though you do have to add a step for tolerances.  Yes, this addition will make it slightly easier perhaps but it doesn't actually add any function, neither does the angled cut option.

Wrapping text, as @fuchsr says, is really a job for the original CAD software 'though it might make it easier for forgers to pass off 'signed' copies of other's work as their own; not a market  sector I would encourage.

We really need just a very good slicer.  If Prusa want to make another CAD package that's fine, I look forward to it, but incorporating it into the slicer is just another example of Microsoft-style software bloat.  Keep it simple, keep it separate.

Cheerio,

I'm going to say it this way, and I should have said this up top. We need a Tool box for Slicing, not a Toy box for people that don't want to learn CADD Joe. Start by fixing the basic functionality, of the new UI you created, it's better then it was but a lot was left not working correctly. It really effects work flow for slicing. This software and the UI have the potential to be Great, but its being pissed away on these newb features. Its making me sad, this could have become pro grade Slicer software as blender has become for CADD.
