solid top layers + vase mode change?

Trying to slice a model (soda bottle) in PrusaSlicer 2.1.0 in vase mode.  The model has a small opening at the top that supposed to be closed with a few top layers.  I've done it before several months ago but lost the gcode.  I'm trying to do it now and PrusaSlicer is basically refusing to allow to enable vase mode with any top layer; it HAS to be no top layers.

When did this change?  And why?  Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense why this change was made.

RE: solid top layers + vase mode change?

If it printed in vase mode before, I suspect the part top surface isn't flat. So just turn off top layers and slice.  But understand vase mode can't do things like rectilinear infill, so the part must be designed properly for a spiral wrapped top surface.  And that surface can't be flat or else the vase will fail (vase mode must build on a prior layer).

If you printed it before, and the top surface is flat, but rectilinearly filled, it wasn't printed vase more.

Best to drag and drop a photo of the old print showing the top.

This one is cheating, but sort of shows how someone else might have done it.

RE: solid top layers + vase mode change?

I wonder if it would be possible to let the user decide if top layers are a good idea or not. I mostly print thin structures (about 1mm) in spiral mode. It would technically be possible to print it in spiral mode until the last 1-2mm and then switch to "regular" mode an print the top, if the structure is thin enough e.g. both walls are close enough together it would work just fine. Maybe we could slice the whole structure in Vase mode without the top 1mm and then slice only the top 1mm in normal mode with an z offset of the height of the structure, to fool the slicer and start the print on top of the formerly printet spiral structure.

how can one request such a feature for the prusa slicer?

greeting, Hans

@s-na

Hey Hans,

I'm having the exact same thought! My recent prints are mostly less than 10mm thin which I think would be fine to add a solid fill on top.

Do you have any progress on this? Or should we request such features?

Please let me know!

Cheers,

Z
