RE: Settings have all disappeared

@marco-tonoli

That's because nearly all the filament profiles are part of the prusa vendor space now.  If your printer is NOT part of the same vendor space the filaments are not available to you.  Nearly all the defaults are part of that space though.  As I said you have to make them visible (either through enabling the show incompatible profiles flag option or adding a prusa printer and selecting that printer as your printer).  Once they are visible in the list you can make copies and make sure the copies are detached from the system preset.  That way they will be available to all printers.

Anything that is still attached to the system preset risks the risk of being reset the next time there is a profile update from Prusa.

The other option is to take one of your old config bundle saves and edit it , change your custom printer to add it to the prusa vendor space and import the modified bundle in.  That way Prusa Slicer thinks its a prusa printer and the system defaults become available.

ok solved.. with the incompatible flags. Also the "ufficial"  filament now are show.... i do not understand why made these filament incompatible with not prusa printer...

thanks

That's a very good question.  Personally I think they have shot themselves in the foot with that decision.  As the amount of these issues seems to be on the rise as people update to 2.2.0

i think maybe ok... but during update can make a windows like "we found these incompatible material, do you want it?"  and not make it disappear.... i moved from cura to prusaslicer mainly because every update was a stupi pain with lost printer configuration...  i do not want to search another slicer...

Because we want to support multiple vendors and if we did not make this decision it would be an utter mess and we would have to ship crystal balls to help you understand how the print and filament profiles from different vendors clash against each other and which one is winning.

I know why the decision was made, you explained it previously.  That doesn't mean as a user I agree with it though.

I think all the filament profiles even though tweaked for Prusa printers are good enough to use as a base for non prusa ones and so should be available to all.
From now on I'll refrain from posting on any Settings are missing based threads and let all the traffic go your way and your tech support guys can deal with it.

Also we cannot possibly know how people are using our software. You give people the options and they will find a use for these options, which are sometimes unexpected to us and sometimes outright surprising. When doing a breaking change we have to judge the impact, which is difficult, because we do not see into customer heads and computers. Publishing alphas on github helps to collect some feedback. This gives us just a taste for the community response, as the majority of feedback is provided after the major release, and then it is too late.

When doing a breaking change...

So you don't follow semantic versioning then? https://semver.org/

There are a lot of well known ways to manage changes to software. "Technical reasons" is often used as a reason for breaking changes, but I think the real reason is a lack of will or resources to make life easier for the user. This mindset seems to particularly affects "free" software - there is no potential for loss of revenue however unhappy the users are.

Maybe this will help.. I had the same problem bringing in my printer profiles. I just posted a video on how I fixed this on my YT channel. You could do the same thing to show to the Prusa Presets if you want to as well.

For me I was missing my User Preset (filaments) I was only showing one I did import from somewhere else. so I started importing my user setting as if its a config and this way they show back up in my modified printer config .  It's a little strange to to me why I lose the option to use them.

Maybe there could be an option to import user profile fillment.  I might have miss something that already existed. so please Pursa Dev make a little video so we are in the same boat as you with this! 👍 👍  It took to much time to calibrate those filament profile to have them not accessible on the same printer .

Maybe i did something wrong but it really not clear! I mopinion this softwarere is really clear and robust to let us know if something is not gona work .

Keep up the good work! 🍻

Maybe there could be an option to import user profile fillment in the config Wisard ...  I might have miss something that already existed. so please Pursa Dev make a little video so we are in the same boat as you with this! 👍 👍

Well prior to your co's take over / fork of this slicer - which you have improved it massively - and TY for that... some of us were running multiple Custom non prusa but prusa-esque printers [ Zaribo / Caribou et al ]  I for one have 3 printers with different extruder aasy's, beds , nozzles, motors, and mainboards.  Ive seen little notice or clarification or teaching videos on this major shift in the way the Software handles user defined profiles.

Youre right you have no idea how your users will use the SW ... but making others go thru these gyrations to update to new features every release or lose hours and hours of tweeks tests and settings for their stuff - so its easier for some "vendors" to manage their filaments??? wtf ?

Looking at the supplied vendors profiles in this latest download beta - has nearly zero of the "vendors" of filament I use.  No Atomic, No 3dXtech, SnoLabs ... looks a lot like that move was designed to just make it easier for ... Prusa to manage their filament profiles - not all these imaginary "vendors"

It would be very helpful for a tutorial video for those of us using custom prusa-style printers to figure out how to get our missing profiles for our printers BACK ...  throwing a line of text up on the github - doesnt quite seem all that helpful

I understand that you are unhappy with PrusaSlicer, because you did not find a tuned profile for your non-Prusa Research printer in the Wizard and you also did not find a tuned filament profile for your non-Prusa Research printer and your favorite filament either.

I quite don't understand your issues of

> go thru these gyrations to update to new features every release or lose hours and hours of tweeks tests and settings for their stuff

Once you created your filament profiles, you can either

1) Copy the content of the filaments folder

2) Use the import / export of a Config Bundle.

If you check the latest PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-beta1 (and the upcoming beta2), you will find out, that the number of 3rd party printer profiles and filament profiles tested for these 3rd party printers is growing. The profiles are contributed to us, while we at Prusa Research are putting our money (the money that we receive for selling our printers) into polishing up these 3rd party printer profiles. I call this a service to the community.

https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/releases

You are most welcome to contribute printer and filament profiles for your favorite 3D printer and we will happily integrate them.

While we explained our stance of why printing with a generic filament profile not tested on a particular printer may not be a good idea, we understand why one would want to use such a generic filament profile as a base for her/his experiments or just try her/his luck with it. We will hopefully implement such a generic filament database into PrusaSlicer 2.4, which will be optionally available with any printer profile (3rd party or custom). A filament loaded from this "base" filament set will be marked to indicate that it is a "generic" profile, not specifically tested with the printer. We started to work on such a feature already, but we did not manage to squeeze it into PrusaSlicer 2.3.

@vojtech-bubnik

TY for your pleasant response.  If it is merely as simple as exporting and importing a config bundle in order to use my custom profiles - then I stand corrected.  I apologize for my misunderstanding.  From reading through this thread, looking for HOW TO REGAIN use of my profiles, I understood that the old ways of creating and tweeking profiles had been radically altered and Id have to re create them 1 x 1 over again.

Thats said, if that is not the case - then an admin should put a sticky post at the first post in this thread with a link to the real truth or video tutorial solution showing us how to get our profiles back, as this is by far the most popular result in the myriad of google searches I did in hunting for a fix.  There was another user in here who posted a video of having to tweek each of his profile .ini files to get them to work as well... so clarifying how to accomplish this would be very helpful ...

Frankly, I didnt give 2 $*'s about not finding a "done for me profile" by you or your firm or any other firm ... I dont need your profiles to make my world go around.  I was disturbed that ... the hundreds of hours of testing and tweeks I had invested into my personal profiles that were working just fine in this software - before someone decided to radically alter the means by which it functioned with MY custom profiles, and I could NOT find a solution to get them working again - without having to manually re enter and re create them [ or so I had read in this thread ]   Lets not distort the truth.

No idea why you're being so aggressive. Be aware that nobody else gives "2 $*'s"  about your profiles and that anybody responding is making an honest attempt to help. The fact that the Prusa developers are paid does not make them your punching bag for your frustrations. If you can't be civil, please just go away. Nobody is going to shed a tear. Now if you'd care to relax a tad and try a few things, all is likely not lost...

PrusaSlicer is downright anal about making copies of profiles. If you bother to do a configuration snapshot before an upgrade, there's little chance of anything being permanently lost. Even if you're sloppy about backups, it makes multiple backups. If you check the configuration directory for old versions carefully, there's a very good chance your old profiles are intact.

I have maintained custom printer profiles for my Mk3 since early 2018 and recently added new profiles for an Artillery Sidewinder x1. I have had no problems importing my custom configs from back when Prusa originally forked Slic3r. If upgrading to an Alpha or Beta release, you will naturally have to import any custom profiles since Team Prusa -- by design -- go to great lengths to avoid stepping on previous configs (see above).

What works very well -- if you prepare ahead of time -- is to create a Config Bundle (not just Config) backup periodically. This will contain all of your custom settings that can easily be imported in the future. I find this makes it easy to maintain edit and maintain separate configurations for printers, print settings and filaments. You can use the inheritance feature to good effect to reduce the work involved.

Prusa is working diligently on a good documentation site. Unfortunately, it's difficult for documentation to keep pace with the rapid pace of development, and the original Slic3r was not particularly well documented, so it will take time to catch up. In the meantime, asking for help is a good way to get assistance.
