Retraction Settings Help

Hi All,

I have a model that is clogging my Core ONE+ nozzle. I have tried multiple models, brand new filaments and even changed the nozzle. I am pretty sure the issue is with too many retractions. The model has close to 5,000 retractions over 1 mm in height (from what I have seen in the .gcode file).

I have tried adjusting the filament overrides: Retraction Length = 0.8 mm, Retraction Speed = 10 mm/s, Minimum Travel After Retraction = 5 mm, Retract On Layer Change = Off. I can see that the generated .gcode file has fewer retractions (around 2,200), but the issue (clogging the hotend) still persists.

I must be missing something. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Marian.

RE: Retraction Settings Help

What material is the filament made of? Have you used it successfully with other models without changing anything else?

What type of nozzle are you using (material, diameter, etc.)?

Are you starting with a printing profile and filament profile provided by Prusa? If so which ones?

It would be great if you could share a .3MF file of what you want to print with all the settings you use included.

I may not be the best person to help you further, but the answers to the above questions would provide context needed to investigate the problem.

I also thought I had retractions problems (causing extruder gear jams) when I started printing TPU, but it turned out that the Nextruder simply has too much free space around the extruder gear and idler for the TPU to bunch around and get chewed up. There is a mod on Printables (originally for the MK4S but works for C1) that replaces part of the Nextruder and its idler such that the space is more constrained. I’ve had no issues printing TPU since.

RE: Retraction Settings Help

Here are the details:

  • Filament: I have tried with both Prusament PLA Galaxy Black and Prusament PLA Jet Black. Both spools were brand-new and I have printed other models successfully with the same print settings, filament settings and materials including a 14-hour print with no issues.
  • Nozzle: stock Prusa CORE One HF 0.4 mm
  • Slicer: Prusa Slicer v2.9.5 (Linux)
  • Print Settings: 0.20mm BALANCED (non-modified)
  • Filament Settings: Prusament PLA (non-modified) and Prusament PLA (modified with Filament Overrides - retraction length, retraction speed, travel distance)
  • Infill: 15%

Attached are the following .3MF models:

I also have noticed that the filament sticks to the plastic part that sits just above the top end of the nozzle (not sure how it is called).
