PrusaSlicer 2.3.0 on RaspberryPi 4 - Success

I am running RaspberryPi OS with Desktop, the 32bit version, downloaded from this page: https://www.raspberrypi.org/software/operating-systems/#raspberry-pi-os-32-bit.   Was hoping to run PrusaSlicer 2.3.0 on it as it has become my hobbyshop workstation.

And well, it's a go!

Downloaded PrusaSlicer-2.3.0-GTK2-armhf.AppImage from here: https://github.com/davidk/PrusaSlicer-ARM.AppImage/releases

Put it in it's own sub-directory.

Then ran the following to make the file executable:  chmod +x PrusaSlicer-2.3.0-GTK2-aarch64.AppImage

Program can then be started with ./PrusaSlicer-2.3.0-GTK2-armhf.AppImage at a terminal command prompt.

Sweet!

Please don't answer if you think I'm being rude but I'm genuinely curious, ? Why would you do that?

It can't be workflow convenience because surely you not going to run a CAD package on the Pi! You can't run OctoPrint on the same Pi, or perhaps you could but you shouldn't.

@towlerg

Well the simple answer is that my RasPi workstation is close to the bench where I have my 3D Printer.   No, not doing CAD on the RasPi, but it's still networked to where I save .STL files.  So I can retrieve .STL file into PrusaSlicer on RasPi workstation, slice and save to SD card and step over to printer and away I go.  Or so that's why I wanted PrusaSlicer on RasPi workstation.  But what do I know, I'm new to all this . . .

@towlerg

I’ve considered doing something like this because PrusaSlicer only runs on a computer and I spend most of my non-working hours on my iPad instead (I have both a new MacBook Pro for work and iMac for personal use but they are in another room, rather than on my lap). So it would be convenient if I can load and slice STL using my iPad and send it to OctoPrint without me going to the iMac. Or if I need to re-slice a model with tweaked setting whilst I am at my printer in the garage and start a print again, without going all the way back to the computer.

I can't speak for @kizmokd, but I've actually run into a use case where this might be very handy. I worked with a guy who was mass-producing wargame scenery. He had a small range of pieces but would customize settings and filament for different customers. He had different printers configured for different print types. I worked with him on a build process based on running PrusaSlicer from the command line, specifying different config files for different print settings & filaments. Being able to do this on the RPi would allow someone to remote in, build gcode for a specific print, then print via OctoPrint. I could see a fully automated build process where any change to a config file triggers a re-slicing of parts in a common library so they're ready to go when needed.

Not that you couldn't do the build on a desktop and sync the files over wifi, but an autonomous build environment for each printer an interesting idea.

Interesting concept.  How well does it work?

Thanks.  I'll give this a try.

Ever since the hard drive died on the ancient boat-anchor peecee that I was using in the train room, I've been using a Pi 4 down there, and the performance in general is not bad at all.  I sometimes modify designs at that machine, and now (well, as soon as I download and install and ...) I can slice them.

It's not the fastest machine there is, but it actually performs quite well.  Most of the time I just use it in terminal sessions to log in to the Pi boxes I use to control various things on the model railroad.

The only thing that it's really incompatible with is one model RR drafting package which runs on Windoze, and will not run on the ARM processor with wine, as I do on my main upstairs machine which is Ubuntu.

I installed the OS from the link you said, but I am having problems with the PrusaSlicer installation.
You download the image directly from the raspberry? Or you download it from an external computer and you save the image to the SD from the computer?

Would appreciate any help

Firmware updates from Octoprint?

I have my Prusa i3 mk3s+ with MMU2s out in my workshop, while I do most of my work from inside my home. My computer is a desktop, located inside my house. If I have to update the firmware on my printer, I currently have to bring my printer inside my house (which is a PITA since it is inside the LACK enclosure with the PSU outside the enclosure). I have Octoprint running on an RPi 4 connected to the printer. It would be great if I could do firmware updates from this RPi 4 - would installing Prusaslicer on that RPi alongside Octoprint help with that?

This, I want to fully remote control the process. The only thing I want to go to the print area for is to fix a problem or fetch a completed print.

I want to import files to the SD, use full menu control to remotely start, and watch the print.

I have too many options on how to do this and too little experience to choose the right path for my needs.

A PI-4b or Rooted Smartphone seems ideal, but I've yet to see a walkthrough which describes how to set all this up clearly enough to not confuse me.

Prusa link(control),running on R-PI-4b (controller, should this be usbB or somehow wire it to the Rambo Board?
