PrusaSlicer 2.2 & 2.3 add an unwanted wipe

Prusa Slicer has inserted a wipe after a print sequence within each layer.

How can I disable this wipe?

I have a prusa Mk3S with No MMU: I only have one print head.

In the printscrn attached I have removed every option bar the wipe and it clearly shows the wipe movements: during which there is no extrusion.

This is not only slowing my prints, but for big prints (even at 265degrees) it causes the material in the head (PET-G) to freeze and if you dont pick it up quickly it stops printing altogether and one has to restart the print.

I admit I tried out smoothing in 2.3 but I have since uninstalled 2.3 and reinstalled 2.2: same result. Of course I have now reinstalled 2.3.

Anyone know how I can stop this unwanted wiping feature?

I'm understanding Printer Settings->Extruder 1->Retraction->Wipe while retracting is not the option you want. Is that correct? Wiping is tied to retraction in PrusaSlicer. When enabled, a wiping action is done immediately before retraction. If you disable that option, no wiping is done. Is that not what you're after?

I have found that if I calibrate my extrusion multiplier and set the correct filament diameter for each filament, I can get by with 0.2-0.4mm retraction, 0.4mm z-lift, and no wiping. This includes PETG.

I don’t understand the picture I’m looking at. All I see is an empty print surface?

Also, if you save your PrusaSlicer project as a 3mf file and upload it here, we can see all yours settings.

@bobstro

Thank you Bob, but I dont have any retraction set. (retraction length set to zero)

However the wipe while retracting box was checked (but greyed out of course due to the above )so I set a retraction length, unchecked the box

still had the same result on slicing.

Its a puzzle but thank you again for your thoughts.

@fuchsr

The picture should show the options box with ONLY the wipe box checked and yellow lines showing the travel of the wipe at 39mm/s

I am sorry if that was not clear.

I attach a .3mf file of this.

If you open the feature types box and un select them all and ONLY select the Wipe in the Options box (view set to speed) you will ONLY see the movements of the wipe which is what the .jpg should show.

There shouldn't be ANY wipes (at least, I dont want any wipes) so back to teh question, how can we remove them?

I had a helpful message that .3MF file is not an accepted file type after I wrote my last reply.

I have added the extension  ".zip" to the file name.

I think you can just delete the .zip part of the file name to read the .3mf

When I loaded your 3mf project in the retract value was set to zero but both retract on layer change and wipe while retracting were ticked (but greyed out).  I also got the wipe in the slice preview.  When I untick the retract on layer change and wipe while retracting then the wipe goes away on the slice preview.

For me even if I set retraction to 1mm and just untick wipe while retracting the wipe goes away.

I've seen similar behavior before where a users project was saving/loading differently on someone else's install than on their own.  I think they had a problem with their profiles, they just couldnt turn a setting off even though it looked like they had.  Unfortunately I cant recall what they did to remedy it.  I think the saved a config bundle and then wiped them out and started from scratch.

I'd wait and see if anyone else notes the same with your project file and if so it might be worth opening an issue on github with a zipped up copy of your profile directory so the devs can take a look and see whats happening.

RE: PrusaSlicer 2.2 & 2.3 add an unwanted wipe

For some reason I couldn't see the yellow lines on my iPhone 🙁

Looking at the 3mf I see what neophyl is seeing.

However, when I reset the profile to the stock Mk3S+ 0.8mm and then set retraction to 0, such as in your profile, I don't see any wipes.

So, not sure what's going on.

Thank you guys. The wipe and retraction combination has something to do with it.

I saw that the "retract on layer change" was also set (again, greyed out)

so I set the retraction length to 2, unchecked the Retract on layer change and set the retraction length back to zero and guess what

N0  Wipes! None!

So the retraction code isn't working properly:

We need to add a line of code that says:

If the Retraction Length is set to zero Then uncheck the Retract on Layer Change box AND uncheck the Wipe While Retracting box.

Or a check to ensure the wipe is not added if the Retraction Length is set to Zero.

What do you think?

I agree, it looks as if there’s a flaw in the settings logic. I would open up a ticket on the Prusaslicer github site, with the details you’ve worked out. This is a user-to-user support forum, and I don’t think the PS engineers hang out here much.

So to Summarise the problem:

If the Retract on Layer Change box AND  the Wipe While Retracting box is checked but the Retraction Length is set to Zero a very long wipe is initiated within each layer at different places around the layer (possibly wiping between retractions but it seems more complicated than that.)

The fix is to set a value for Retraction Length and uncheck  the Retract on Layer Change box AND Wipe While Retracting box, Then reset the Retraction Length to Zero.

There needs to be a code review of the Wipe Wile Retracting code to ensure that if the Retraction Length is set to Zero NO wipe is initiated.

Ill raise a request on Github to this effect.

Short Shrift from the programmer: apparently its a user error. If we set a value in the retraction override settings, We should also set a retraction length in the printer settings/Extruder 1/retraction /length.

Frankly this is a poor response. 1) an override should mean exactly what it says and 2) The resultant mass of wipes is wholly unacceptable.
