Prusa Slicer Retraction Settings

In PrusaSlicer there are two configurations for retraction, one is in

Printer Settings / Extruder No. / Retraction

the other is in

Filament settings/ Filament Overrides / Retraction.

I wonder which of the two to set, which of the two takes precedence over the other.

Prusa MK3S + & MMU2S

Thank you

Filament settings take precedence.

Yes the filament override does what its called and overrides the one set for the generic extruder setting.  Its the same with any other setting called an over ride.

You will also find some settings in several places that are not called an overide.  These tend to be handled slightly differently.  Most notably volumetric  flow maximums.  This can also be set in several places but with this the lower value configured is what is used, as these act as limiting factors so the lowest limit is used.

RE: Prusa Slicer Retraction Settings

I just saw your post on retraction settings and I am having problems with Prusa 2.5, 2.6  ... if Retraction is set to 2mm its stringy, if I set to 5mm it retracts but it doesnt pull filament back enough to start printing again, I change in Printer Settings and was wondering I need to change in Filament settings as well ...

My printer profile is Marlin Legacy as its a Dbot with Arduino Mega and Ramps 1.4 ... but I also have a Anet A8 which is the same setup ...

Many thanks for help this is driving me crazy  .

Only now I saw this! Now it makes sense...I was changing the setting under the Printer settings...Thank you!

But I wonder, what's the point of having the retraction settings under printer if the Filament settings take precedence??

RE: Prusa Slicer Retraction Settings

Some filaments can behave differently to others and can require different retraction settings, depending on how viscous they are, affecting how much they ooze etc. The override in filament settings allows me to set a particular retraction setup for a particular filament, and then it only affects prints I choose that filament for. Leaving the general settings under Printer Settings for majority of standard filaments/prints.
