Overlapping parts

Hi, I have a model that has overlapping parts with different colors (MMU). Is it possible to make one part dominant over the other? Currently, some of the overlapping faces print in one color and some in the other. I want only one of them to print whenever there is an overlap.

RE:

I'm not sure what your underlying problem is.  Please save the project as a .3mf (File > Save Project as), then zip it and post it here for us to diagnose along with your settings.

you may also want to look, or ask, in the MMU section of the forum, on the off chance that this has already been addressed.

RE:

Thanks for your replys, I'll post also in the MMU section. I am attaching the 3mf file so you can see. I have an underlying extruder 1 (red) model and a few overlapping multimaterial painted surfaces that are set to extruder 2 (black) and 3 (white). When sliced the black and white parts appear partially colored and partially red.

RE: Overlapping parts

You do realise that model has 34315 open edges according to PS ?  Its full of errors.

All the errors will be what's causing the problems.  Its having trouble determining where the sections start and stop I think.

The errors are due to the fact that these are open surfaces, there is no volume to them. I could not find a satisfactory way to close these surfaces, but the new version of PrusaSlicer provides a solution in the form of multimaterial painting. This feature creates a volume and as you can see this does in fact mostly color the model when sliced whereas that would not happen if I just set a color to these surfaces.

I originally planned to use MeshMixer to give these surfaces a volume, but it turns out the surfaces are too complex for MeshMixer.

Yes and that is why PS cant deal with them either.  I think you are going to have to fix that model much more to get anything satisfactory out of it.

I'm open to suggestions, after much tinkering PrusaSlicer 2.4 currently gives by far the best results. It seems to me that I am currently only a slight tinkering away from a satisfactory solution, but I'm always open to other working solutions.

RE: Overlapping parts

Beyond fixing the model no.

Take a small section, one of the the eyes for example.  Its 2 overlapping meshes as you point out.  Great.  But those 2 meshes are not aligned, some bits of one mesh dip below the other and vica versa.  So when you colour it its only natural that its a patchwork as your underlying meshes are.  Setting one dominant over the other wont make a bit of difference as no matter what order you have them theres always bits of both visible.

Its like that ALL over though, its a mess.

Basically whoever sculpted that did not do a very good job.

Actually, the meshes are exactly overlapping. There can’t be any misalignment as they are exactly the same mesh. Just the same file opened twice in two different ways such that one is a full body and the other is a list of parts.

RE: Overlapping parts

But there are so many non manifold edges that when slicer tries to 'fix' them in its causing the mesh to be distorted and so it is no longer aligned as far as slicing goes.

The thing slicers have the most trouble dealing with are non manifold edges.  I exported the stl from PS and opened in Blender.   That doesn't actually show the mesh as separate parts so I'm not sure if the export from PS is funky or if its because PS is exporting the 'fixed' version.  Blender shows the stl has 44,560 Non Manifold edges.  It also shows 40 bad contiguous edges and 393,962 intersecting faces.  But it will mainly be the non manifold edges causing the problem.

I've seen that toy before somewhere.  The underlying structure is printable if you delete all the parts except the one named 'spideman separated.'

If you have downloaded it, it would be worth tracking back the remix thread and find the original for colouring, 'though you would be better prnting this plain and painting with enamels.

RE: Overlapping parts

If you know of any painted remix please give me a link, I couldn’t find any. I did the separation assuming that I’ll be able to create a complex with MeshMixer, but the program couldn’t deal with this separation and I got stuck with separated surfaces.

Sorry.  I think someone posted an issue with the same file a couple of weeks ago.  Where did you download the file from?

Meshmixer doesn't really fit this sort of job, you might be able to do something with Blender.

RE: Overlapping parts

You could retopo over the areas you want to be different colours/objects in Blender but it would be a fair amount of work even if you were a whiz using the retopology tools.

Painting the triangles of the original base mesh in PS looks like it would also be a hefty chunk of time too.

I think whatever way used will unfortunately require work.
