No extrusions in the first layer

I have an stl file that as carefully as I can look at it seems to be OK, but when I slice it I get the error:

There is an object  with no extrusion in the first layer

I don't exactly know that that means, but it prevents me from exporting the gcode and I don't know how to fix it.   I tried flipping it over, which'd mess up the gcode because of supports, but it still gives me the same error.

Either post your saved project file or the stl (both need to be zipped up for attachment to the forum) without it then anything is just a guess.

The two common causes for this are:

The bottom layer of the model is so fine/thin that the slicer is unable to extrude filament fine enough - this is common where models come to a point or a knife-edge at the base.

Or, due to a modelling error there is a detached part of the model, again micro-thin, beneath the intended base.

Sometimes it is enough to use the cut function at base level and discard the 'empty' bottom section.

Cheerio,

Two things -- first , I've attached the STL file [I'm not sure why uploading a zip is ok but uploading the stl, itself, isn't, but it doesn't matter

second: with this stl, once I had loaded it and got the error slicing the slicer was *broken*.  That is, when I deleted that stl and loaded another it got the *same* error, but after i exited slicer and restarted it, it did all the other stl files just fine.

RE: No extrusions in the first layer

When I load the stl into PS 2.4.2 I get the pop up asking about dimensions appearing to be in inces not mm and do I want to convert.  Saying no results in a tiny tiny model and yes results in a model approx 1" diameter and 5mm high.

When sliced I get no errors though.  The resulting slice is pretty pointless though as the nostrils of the cow are barely there they are so thin and the eyes aren't attached to the rest of the model so I'm not sure what the intended use of this is.

That was one reason we prefer saved project files, as a 3mf contains ALL the settings you are using to slice with.  The profiles I used were a pretty standard mk3 and a pla filament and a modified 0.2mm quality print profile.

You didn't mention what version of Prusa Slicer you were trying to use either.

Hmm.. I wonder what was going on.   The dimension problem is one I used to run into with Fusion 360 -- if I forget to export to stl converting tmm I get that teeny tiny model.   Doing an scale by 256 usually fixes that just fine.

BUT: you're right.  I just tried again I've tried several ways: slicing the original [teeny] model, slicing the teeny upscaled by 7500 [!!!] and letting prusaslicer convert the units.  *all*three*worked*.  I cannot figure why I had all that trouble....  Oh well.

thanks all...
