New ironing feature suggestion

My comment would normally go to a “contact us” or “suggestions” route, but since I can’t find any such inputs, I will put it here.

The ironing feature is very good, and as described, very slow.  There are several choices of places to be ironed, but there is one additional option I think would be valuable.

My prints (lab instruments) probably push the limit on part accuracy.  I need flat, straight, and tough surfaces on my parts.  Sometimes where one part meets another, such as mounting flats, there will be the blob of filament that comes from the final pass where the retraction is not good enough.  I find myself scraping these blobs off the part to insure a good fit, and prevent a slight tilt from the blob.  There are some hard to reach places that make clean up very difficult.

The ironing function could smooth out these spots very well, making the original surface more uniform and flat than any other method, short of machining.  To activate these spots and not a whole surface, the paintbrush tool used for supports would make a perfect tool.  Just paint the flat in question and the printer would iron just that spot.

All issues as well as feature requests etc should be made at the Prusa Slicer github repository located here https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues

As there are over 1600 open entries please take some time searching to see if your issue or feature request already exists.  I recall that someone has already requested an ironing paint brush function similar to the paint on support enforcer/blockers to define areas for ironing.

Also, if you find an existing issue or make a new one please add a link to it here. I'd like to keep track of this feature request. Thanks

I reported mine here: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-general-discussion-announcements-and-releases/is-ironing-bad-for-strength/

as said there, ironing take a long time to do, having the whole printed part to cool down. In case of printing on top an ironed area, the added parts do not stick on the ironed plane making the whole print so weak that now I prefer to have iron off and then sand the print later on.

@fabrizio

I thought that ironing was only available on the top surface?

It does apply to all the top surfaces of the print. In case something has to be printed on a portion of the top, that part is not ironed but because it cools down during ironing, the layers on top of that do not stick very well causing the print to be very weak

@fabrizio

Oh, I see your point. So you want to be able to disable ironing on some top surfaces?

@fabrizio

I think I may have a solution. Add a height modifier that encompasses the surface you do not want to iron. Click on the gear icon on the range and add settings/ironing and deselect Enable ironing. I guess you need another height modifier to turn it back on.

I also see below Enable ironing in Filament settings/Infill the option Ironing type with three settings but no info. I wonder id Topmost only is what you want.

Hope that helps, have no way to test.
