Need help resolving the conflict between these two objects

I'm trying to create an outlet wall plate, which is a mix of two other models I found on Printables.  I got everything placed where I want it, I adjusted the layer height so that the hex pattern on the wall plate hopefully will pop with a different color in the lines.  But I don't know how to make the cat, which overlaps with the wall plate, take precedence over the wall plate.  I want the cat and the tail to appear over the front of the wall plate where they overlap (I included a concept drawing of what I'm talking about in case it's unclear).  Note that I don't have the filaments configured properly, I planned to do that once I got the other problems resolved, but I'll be printing it with three filaments, one for the cat, one for the plate, and one for the bottom 0.4mm of the plate only (enough that the hex pattern is in its own color with the lower color showing in the lines). I thought by merging the models it would do what I want (that I could control the precedence by ordering the models in the merge), but once I merged it the layer height range that I applied to the wall plate no longer appeared to work.

I'll be printing this on a MK4 with MMU.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here are the two models that I mixed:

Here is the concept drawing:

Well, I think I figured it out.  Instead of using the height adjuster, I used a slab modifier, merged the two models (which fixed the cat taking precedence) and then marked everything in the model above 0.4mm as being color 3.  The cat is color 1 and the plate is color 2, but only in the first layer.  After that the whole thing is color 3.  I would still love to hear any opinions on other ways to solve it!
