layer height: add feature "last or top layer height"
Hi,
I am just thinking if it would make sense to implement a feature that is printing the very last layer thinner than the rest (with same intention and positioning as ironing)
Background: Often the layer height for a model can be big, but sometimes the infill of small features on the top surface is suffering from big layer heights. Sometimes I implement this manually by a height range modifier and found out that it can be a good practice for flat high quality parts to decrease the last layer in layer height and speed (in addition)
Would an implementation easily be possible, or is there maybe already a workaround (beside manual operation "layer height modifier")?

First of all this is mainly a user to user forum. Feature request (and issue reports) should be made on the Prusa Slicer github located https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues
Stuff there is tracked and gets given a issue number. Although before opening a new one you should search for an existing open or closed issue with as many keywords as you can think of that are relevant. Given that there are over 2000 open issues and over 6000 closed ones.
The 'normal' method if you want your top layers thinner is to just use the variable layer height tool and decrease the top area only. Takes only a few seconds.
One other alternative/workaround/technique some of use for modifiers that we use a lot is to add a small object, make it non printable and then add the modifiers we want to it. We then save the project and use it as a default. So when creating a new project we load the 'default' in and we have objects with stored modifiers on them. Which can then be copied and pasted to the parts we want to print as you can use cntl+C and cntl+V.
You can have multiple small non printing objects that act as libraries for your commonly used things. This is one of the benefits of the 3mf project system. As a project also stores your selected profiles they can also be used to create defaults for different printers if you have more than one. So for example Mk3_pla_quality, Mk3_petg_vase or CR10_Petg_speed. As many or as few as you like.
For the height range one you can set a range of the max height to the bottom of the plater with say 0.1mm. Then you can copy it over and just adjust the bottom level value to be just under your objects height. That makes the process much easier. Most people don't realise they can copy and paste many of the modifiers from object to object or even within the same object if you need multiple different layer height ranges.
Some things cant be copied though, like any object painting or a variable layer height as they are object specific.
