Is there a nudge feature in the slicer?

Hi all,

Been spending last few days in Prussia Slicer, i like it better than Cura as the navigation is super easy and productive.

I was wondering if there is a "nudge" feature in the software wherein i could nudge the geometry of the model on different axis by a very minute amount until you get the desired results? Same with the rotation tool.

I checked a few documents and don't see this.

any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by a nudge, you can place the the Object or part in any position on the build surface, either by Gizmo or using the object manipulation pane.

I have this funny feeling that by "nudge" you are referring to some type of compensation that would imply that you are having a problem with your printer physically.

Since I don't know what printer your using, or for that matter any thing about your situation, filament ,printer, model, etc, etc, I really can't suggest any fixes.

Good luck

i meant something like the below but with your 3d model so you can finetune its placement in 3d space...

"In Adobe Photoshop, nudge is a feature that allows an object to be moved. For example, if you're working with a layer, you can press the arrow keys to nudge that object in any direction, one pixel at a time. Holding down the Shift and pressing an arrow key nudges a layer ten pixels at a time."

i thought that would exist already.

I adjust the values in the table in the right hand side of the slicer window, this allows very precise positioning, if you use the unlock button, you can also scale on individual axis.

the developers don't generally hang out here, but if you raise a request on the Prusa Slicer git Hub page, the developers will consider the option.

@bruno-bernier

I've been using Photoshop since Version 4.5, professionally, and I don't mean CS. However, I don't equate "nudge" to 3D even though I have a 3d version of Photoshop. I have several 3D packages under my belt as well professionally for more then 30 years.

Now, with all that lameness out of the way, slicer does have a feature similar to PS (Photoshop the original PS), you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move a selection in the X or Y. Pressing the the arrow keys by themselves will move a selection 10mm (1cm) in the direction of arrow key, and holding Shift and pressing an arrow key will move a selection 1mm in the chosen direction. However as Joan has mentioned using the Object or Part manipulation pane to the right hand side is much more precise and faster.

If you are in fact thinking of some type of compensation for a physical problem your having with your printer, the answer would be to address the problem with the printer by fixing it, whether that be a loose belt, lose grub screws or some type of feed (extrusion) issue etc,. Adding compensation in the software would not be the answer for these type of problems.

This is a recent post I participated in where I explain in a simplified way the coordinates system of PrusaSlicer. This may help you if your having an issue with it's convoluted usage.

The arrow keys will move a model, and you can use shift-arrow to move in increments of 1 mm. For more fine control, the best option in Prusaslicer to accomplish this is to use the numeric location fields, as Joan described.

Thanks for all the feedback

I did try the arrows and did see a move but it was too big of a move but i think the shift would do the trick for what i need. I don't have enough practice with the table and i am still struggling with the spatial orientation to accurately type in the information so i like to see it done visually.

Anywhoo the reason for all of this is that i am looking at printing a life size r2 d2 and i got some files to do it. I am working on merging files together to sort of "weld" them together so that i can cut on the gluing and bondo post processing.

I do know know it this is even going to work.

What i am doing is taking a part then placing the adjoining part to it and then making it intersect but as close to the seam as possible so that the items merge together. When i set it right and do a print preview it looks like the parts are now one big piece. Hopefully my assumption is correct and that it does indeed weld the parts together.

so that is why i needed the wedge tool so i can move the parts together with nudging until the parts are finally one part in print preview.

that's the story.

thanks

RE: Is there a nudge feature in the slicer?

Be careful when placing different objects that close together.  Prusa Slicer treats Objects individually, that means if you overlap then it will slice them such that your printer will try to put plastic from the 2 objects into the same space.  That does not end well.  Use the merge function to logically combine them together.  This makes PS slice as if one object avoiding the problem.  When merged its just one Object with several Parts.  You can still move the individual Parts around to get the overlap/joining you need.  Also once merged the Slice gap closing radius setting comes into effect too.

yes. I was aware of the merge function which is a reason why i moved from cura for now.

I have used merge to "fuse weld" the parts together and when i play the print up and down and i make sure that the splitting is actually gone when i go up and down the model on that seam. It looks like the print is indeed welded together which looks good to me. I will print a test file when i get my printer and see if this actually works but i am pretty confident it does. The thing i am most worried about is if am going to cause some parts to be off and that is why i was talking about "nudging" so i could get the most minute values for welding the pieces together.

thanks

RE:

well one things for sure, if you complete this project your going to know all kinda kewl stuff about PrusaSlicer.

I would strongly urge you to learn the coordinate system.

Good Luck

Just tried the shift- plus keys. Smooth as butter.  Awesome!
