Installing PrusaSlicer 2.3.0-RC1 over 2.2.0 GA on Win10

I'd like to check out the monotonic infill and ironing features, and help where I can with final QA. But, I don't know how to install the zip file of 2.3.0-RC1 over the existing latest 2.2.0 GA.

Since there isn't a windows installer for RC1, do I just unzip the contents over the files in the 2.2.0 directory? If I did that, would I be able to go back to 2.2.0? I guess I could always re-install 2.2.0, I have my config bundle saved. If I do get myself on 2.3.0-RC1, Once 2.3.0 goes GA, how would I ensure I had a clean install GA of 2.3.0 without any cruft from 2.2.0?

Just unzip the folder to wherever you want but I’d suggest NOT the currently installed version. Then you just run the exe file in the folder. You don’t need to run any installer. You can create a shortcut to the exe if you want to make it easier to start each time.

Hello,

I have 2.2.0 installed and running w/o any problems.  I've unzipped 2.3.0-RC1  (win64) to a new directory but clicking on the .exe results in nothing.  I've also tried overwriting the 2.2.0 installation, but have the same results.  The only thing that seems to work is installing 2.2.0 from the .exe installer.  Any ideas as to what could be wrong?  Thank you.

As an update, I was able to unzip it on another computer that previously did not have any Prusa progams installed on it and it works fine.  That leads me to believe that there is either something conflicting with it or there is a registry setting causing it not to load properly on the first computer.

Its more likely to be something in your profile directory that it stopping it launch rather than a registry setting.

Id open up 2.2 and get that running.  I'd then use the Export Config bundle option under File to make a export copy of all your customised profiles.  This is a nice backup to have anyway , I do this periodically.  However it ONLY backs up your customised personal profiles.  It does not save any system default print, filament or printer profiles.

The using the Help>Show configuration folder option on the PS menu to locate the profiles directory.  I'd then copy this entire directory somewhere to make a backup of it too.  Its also what would be needed by the dev's if a defect report is made on github as they would need to see the contents of the profile directory to have any chance of figuring out what was causing the issue.

Once you have the 2.2 backed up like so you can remove the configuration folder and then when you next run the exe for the 2.3 it will start as if on a clean install and go through the wizard etc again to install any default printers, filaments etc.  Once you have the defaults installed and it opens and runs you can then do a import config bundle to import your previously saved custom profiles back in from 2.2.

You might also want to consider opening an issue on github with your problem and attaching the zipped up contents of your configuration folder. https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+sort%3Aupdated-desc

I forgot to report back that I've been happy using 2.3.0-RC2 unzipped into a folder on ~/Desktop, of course, I have a backup of my config before I started running it. Really happy with monotonic infill!
