Installing prerelease

How do you install the prerelease? I can never find and executable on that page and it's frustrating as hell. How about a simple download this file here and instructions on how to install?

RE: Installing prerelease

First of all 'that page'  , which page are you making a reference to ?

All the pre releases are store don github.  You simply go to the version you want, expand the asset listing to show you the files list, download the one for your OS.  Its a zip file so you extract it to a folder and then just double click the exe file (at least on windows).  You dont install it, there no installer.  You just run it and you get the software.

So go to https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer   , then select the Releases link, (its on the right) for the latest full release, or the +xxx just below it if you want to included alpha and beta versions. https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/releases just to make it easy for you.

The current alpha is https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/releases/download/version_2.9.1-alpha1/PrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1.zip

RE: Installing prerelease

Or go to Prusaslicer>Preferences>GUI>Notify about new releases and set it to All. You'll get a small popup in the bottom right when you launch Prusaslicer, telling you that a Pre-release ia available, including a link to the Github page

I'm so used to github now I didn't even notice that was there.  Then again I get emails from github when a new release has been uploaded anyway.

I'm referring to the popup in Prusaslicer. I can get that, no where on that page is there a download or how to install a prerelease. Can you be more detailed on this? "All the pre releases are store don github.  You simply go to the version you want, expand the asset listing to show you the files list, download the one for your OS.  Its a zip file so you extract it to a folder and then just double click the exe file (at least on windows).  You dont install it, there no installer.  You just run it and you get the software."

I cant find anything that says download a zip file for 2.9.1 like I see for 2.9.0.

Here are the assets for 2.9.1

PrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1.dmg

140 MBlast weekPrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1.zip

95.5

MBlast weekSource code(zip)l

ast weekSource code(tar.gz)last week

Here are the listings for 2.9.0

PrusaSlicer-2.9.0+macOS-universal.dmg

106 MBDec 20, 2024PrusaSlicer-2.9.0+win64.zip

81.3 MBDec 20, 2024Source code(zip)

Dec 20, 2024Source code(tar.gz)Dec 20, 2024

Why are they both different? 2.9.0 has a windows zip, 2.9.1 i have no idea what those files are and what to use.

Okay.

Click on the link in the popup

You're now on the Github page:

Scroll down to "Assets"

Click on the down arrow to expand

Well, there's the Zip file. The .dmg file is for Mac.

Now, why you would want to install an alpha release, that's a different question….

RE:

If you are on Windows, you download the file named "PrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1.zip", unzip it, change to the unzipped directory named "PrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1" and double-click on the file named "prusa-slicer.exe". PrusaSlicer will start. No installation (with setup.exe or .msi package) necessary. If you have used an older version of PrusaSlicer before on your system, it will ask you at first run if you want to import the settings from the previous version or not.
This process will not uninstall the previous version of PrusaSlicer and you can still use the older version if you want after that.

Reading your message again, now I think you might have actually made it here. Then I'm not sure what you're confused about because there's clearly a zip file there?

RE: Installing prerelease

I literally posted the link to the zip file.  You click on the link and it downloads the zip for 2.9.1.  You then extract and just click the exe to run it.  There is no installer, you just need to set up a suitable shortcut. m Each time you want to run the software you click the exe (or user created shortcut)

There's no difference to the assets for 2.9.0 and 2.9.1 on that page though. There are 4 for each version and the names are appropriately listed.
PrusaSlicer-2.9.0+win64.zip, is version 2.9.0 for windows 64 based machines.
PrusaSlicer-2.9.1-alpha1.zip, is version 2.9.1 Alpha 1 for windows 64 based machines.  So its the first Alpha release of the 2.9.1 software.

Normally this would be followed by possibly further alpha versions, or a beta version or 2 and then a final 'proper' release.
The .dmg file is for MAC, the .zip file is for windows, the other 2 are Source Code in case you want to compile the software yourself locally.  All you need is the zip file for Windows.  IF you are running windows.

Also as I mentioned if you want the full list you need to click on the smaller link

Them link where it says +165 releases.  That gets the the FULL list.  The one at the top is the latest proper non alpha/beta release.  You can go right back to any of the releases that way.  Back to before it was Prusa Slicer.

Just create a github account and sign up for notifications and that way you get an email with them all with direct links to each version as it comes out.

Are you really sure you want to be running pre release software ?  Its real purpose is for those who want to bug hunt and provide feedback to the devs via github anyway so having a basic understanding of github and how it works is pretty much a requirement.
Also you have to be aware that Alphas and Beta versions install their profiles into different locations to the proper releases so that experimental versions don't effect a proper releases profiles.  They are not for casual users.

RE: Installing prerelease

I know you listed a link to the zip file. My question was more related to the difference in the assets listing. The current release shows a zip file labeled win64.zip which I took that to be a windows 64 bit os version. However, the asset for the pre-release doesn't list a file named as such. That's why I asked the question. A simple how to install the prerelease for newbies would have sufficed. Or a simple if you're a windows user extract to a directory and run the executable. I would think that searching for how to install PruSlicer pre-release would actually be found pretty easy by a search engine. I searched the forum and online. An actual readme that explains this would be beneficial as I could not really find anything on how to install. Didn't mean to make a federal case out of it. I've seen it pop up and was just wondering how to install it for once. As such the first reply should have been, "Hey for windows just download the zip file labeled blah blah bla.zip and extract to a temp location and run the executable and thats it."

As Neophyl hinted at, the words newbie and prerelease should probably not be used in the same sentence...

Alpha/Prerelease versions are not aimed at newbies.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

RE: Installing prerelease

When I open Prusa Slicer, there is a box that pops up in the lower right corner saying there is a new pre-relese and nothing happens when I click the "See Release Page" link.
