How to add thicker support walls around outside threads
Hi, I need to print a part with exposed outside thread. The supports are only generated between the individual teeth of the thread which is a nightmare to remove after printing.
Is it possible to add a thick support wall around this part of the exposed thread for easier removal after it is printed?
See picture of the part.
I suspect the thread profile is one originally meant to be cut into metal. You might be able to remove the supports with a thread cleaning die; not a thread cutter.
If this is part is your own design and you have control then change to a wider pitch and use a thread with a rounded profile that will not need any support.
If this must fit an existing thread then try a rounder profile and print supportless - it's a long thread so there shouldn't be too much play.
And if this is PETG or similar polyamide then print a solid blank and cut a thread with a die. PLA threads are hard to cut but relatively easy to print...

I'll try to round off the thread profile. That's a good idea. Thank you!
But out of curiosity, is it possible to add a "support column" around the threads as they are, only the support column would be wide enough that id't be much easier to peel off once printed?
Effectively you would be making a print-in-place nut and bolt ... clearance would have to be 0.25mm or more for any hope of success and with a thread that long the chance of a string or blob jamming it is high. You might manage something tighter if the outer 'nut' part were split into four or more segments with vertical cuts.
Your CAD library might have a suitable thread profile for supportless printing, look for a profile that never goes more than 60° from the vertical, 45° is better.

When you have two cylinders, one with smaller dia than the other and the larger one you print on top, the column is filled with support cylinder, basically. This is what I want to achieve as it is simple to remove as the supports hold together and I don't have to dig them out tiny piece by tiny piece from the thread teeth.
I can't change the thread profile that much unfortunately as this is a functional part that is threaded into a machine, so it needs to fit.

Did you try to print this without supports? I frequently print similar models and never found a need for supports. I may get some stringing but it goes away after screwing the part in and out a few times. May or may not work for your particular model.

Search for 'thread cleaning die' in the size you need, it's probably the most reliable way to remove support - you could try a regular steel nut if you only have one or two to do and are patient. Otherwise print a PETG blank and use a thread cutting die.
