@nate-6

If you can post a Zipped up .3mf project file exported from PrusaSlicer, I'll take a look and see if I can help. The .3mf file should be setup as you would when trying to print the part and will allow us to see all the settings as they pertain to the model in your project.

Note: if you do not Zip the file the forum server will not allow it to be posted.

If you do decide to post the file, please include an image, or images showing the area you would like the Brim to be.

Regards

Select part and right click. At the bottom of popup menu, select "Add Settings". Now select 'Add Skirt and Brim". Brim settings are on right panel with "Object settings to modify".

Hello @swiss_cheese,

You replied to a comment of mine 3 months ago about brims and you posted screenshots from your Brim Tools you said you were working on. I apologize for not replying to you there at the time, and I apologize for messaging you in this reply instead of a direct message. It seems I am unable to send direct messages — I wonder if that's because I currently have very little activity on these forums.

I am very interested in your Brim Tools work and I spent some time today trying to find if you've posted more information about that. I couldn't find anything so I'm writing to you here. Have you published the tool and the tutorial you said you were working on? I'd love to try it out. I think a tool like you showed would be incredibly helpful. I find myself avoiding brims because of the all or nothing nature of them, but I see no reason to not include at least some brims on almost every print if I had the flexibility it seems your tool offers.

I'd love an update if you're willing to give one — maybe you're able to send me a direct message?

Thanks,

Eric

P.S. Your comment in the thread I mentioned:

I dropped the project, I went as far as to purchase a URL and started building the site relative to that and several other tutorials, however due to lack of interest I've recently stopped work on the site, and tools for Slicer. I've decided to just help out on a project by project basis, helping new users, and just pick and choose when I help. Prusa can document this information if they choose, just like the brush tool.

It is of course still possible to do these things in slicer, but people will have to figure it out. This thread is a perfect example of why, two days ago the OP was offered help and you don't hear a word back, I've had exactly the same from folks who have contacted me in private, asking me specifically for help, then bailing on their own project inquiry, because they couldn't figure it out fast enough, or they got bored <--I'm guessing. It's all very casual on their end apparently, but for me it's my valuable free time.

Personally I'd like to find a forum for Pro's, I just don't think this forum is the place for this kind of information.

Good luck, I do appreciate that your interested, however I have to be more constructive with my time, I run a company, I have employees, keeping me very busy. I want to spend my free time helping in more meaningful ways.

Regards

@swiss_cheese

Thank you for your reply. You say you have a company and employees, I saw a picture you posted of dozens of boxes of filament, the screenshots you posted of your Brim Tools are very impressive, and you say you wish there was a forum for Pros. I don’t doubt your help is very valuable to people on these forums and I’m sure being ghosted after offering your valuable free time must be disappointing and frustrating.

But could it be that you’re trying to do too much? Trying to make the tool too customizable, and thus making a long tutorial necessary?

The screenshot of the heart fractal made of brims that your daughter created is definitely super cool, but could you not post a simple utility with a simple tutorial? The current capability of brims in the slicer is so barebones that even a single improvement would be a worth-while addition for nearly anyone. I’m hesitant to offer a suggestion for what a simple tool may look like since I know nothing about how you’ve done any of it, however placement of “lily pads” or choosing inside or outside edges would be such a god send for many of my prints — and I have to assume many others’ as well.

You cite a lack of interest as a reason for abandonment of the project (I’m assuming you mean a lack of interest from forum users), but maybe you just need to make your tools more bite-sized and approachable. Given the current level of brim configuration, the bar is low to create a small tool that is clearly valuable. Point people to the small tool when you see them ask brim questions in these forums — I’ll do the same. Let them easily see that you create tools of value, then add more complexity over time as you have time and interest to do so. If the utility is approachable, clearly valuable, and easy to install, who wouldn’t install it upon learning about it?

I respect that you need to guard your valuable time and use it on what’s meaningful to you, but you’ve already spent months creating what you have. I hope you consider picking up the project again to publish a version 1.

Best regards,

Eric

choosing inside or outside edges

Prusaslicer 2.4.1 has the brim options, inside, outside, both and none.

I agree it's sad that someone as knowledgeable as Swiss became disheartened. I hope you stay active on this board Swiss, I've learned so much from your posts.

RE: how to add brim just to one part of file?

@ericm-2

I came to my scenes, I'm not a software developer, However, I know enough to be dangerous, and I have learn over the years as a alpha/beta tester of several prominent software's, not to highlight the things I need to make my work (my life easier). I could site several examples of this relative to Discrete (Autodesk) software for those of you that don't know, and a couple others, having been in this business for a long time. That said in no way in these forums do I see the advanced knowledge from users necessary to manipulate this information, If I was to give it up, it would simply be more effective to eliminate then to expound upon.

The fact is that if the company can't explain why it is or how it happens, it's cheaper to eliminate it, I've had several real world examples of this to compare to.

If however enough users where capable of and prepared to deal with this knowledge it would make a difference, unfortunately, most of the folks here are sheep and waiting for someone else to tell them how to do things. It would be to my detriment to explain such things, and I could site numerous examples of this from the most basic of modifier setups even for those perceived as knowledgeable here. Unfortunately, I can never share this here, I made a post about snapping lines here using the brush tool and apparently no one from Prusa even had a clue that this was possible, and not only was it possible it was so easy to use I thought it was always intended to be there, apparently know one knew, this was a sign to me to keep my mouth shut.  So I'm sorry but I wont be disclosing any undocumented information about PrusaSlicer ever again, especially after the experiences I've had on GitHub. I will elude to whats possible but won't give specifics.

Good Luck

Hey Swiss Cheese,

I'm very sorry to hear you weren't able to make your brim tools available to the public. Is there any chance you could just throw them up on github so that those of us with the need and desire to try and make them work, can try and figure it out on ourselves. I very much would benefit from this functionality as the only way I can see doing what I need currently is with superslicer boolean modifiers or by physically splitting my model up into separate objects and setting different per object brim settings. Neither of which is particularly desirable as I have a custom build of prusaslicer already to handle some special gcode I need and don't want to port that to superslicer really.

Best regards!

For those of you using Prusa 2.7.4:

right click then select "support material" at the very bottom of drop-down...on the right side of screen you'll see your parts list, with a new "Support Material" sub-section. select it and choose "Generate Support Material" ... this is the only way I have found to make a brim ONLY for specific objects. I think the other comments are for older version.
