How is the current state of “no sparse layers?”

Hi everyone.

I was having issues of diagonal stringing appearing at the end of my MMU prints, going from the wipe tower to the printed parts.

I have narrowed it down to the setting “no sparse layers (experimental)” and searching this, can not find too many specific posts about this, and the last one I found was a year ago.

From watching the print, I’ve noticed it will wipe, then travel upwards in Z before making the X+Y moves to the part.

During the vertical move, it will ooze. This then stretches across to the part and falls onto it, giving the illusion it is from a diagonal move.

In the long run, this causes issues with blobbing as it will end up on the sock and nozzle, sometimes accumulating on infill, etc.

Is there any setting I can use to set retraction solely for the travel distance from the wipe tower to the part?

Thank you in advance to everyone.

Correct, there is no setting for that.  Hence you cant find any information on it.

Dry your filament and keep it dry (dryboxes) during long prints.

Cheerio,

Thank you - I’ve already dried the PETG and it is run through a closed heater system and buffer.

The stringing only occurs during the vertical Z move from the wipe tower, so I have isolated the issue to the no sparse layers setting.

I cannot find any information about setting retraction settings solely for this 1-2 seconds of movement, so I am assuming it was never implemented.

I will avoid using this setting when printing PETG.
