Force full layer ironing in mid-print

Hello,

I'm playing with ironing for a small sign, not unlike the PRUSA example print.  I'd LIKE to have it iron the ENTIRE flat, top surface before I do a color change and print the lettering on top (MK3, Single extruder, but soon to be a MK3S+ and thereafter MMU2!).

When I do a range limited Ironing settings in Prusaslicer and set Enable ironing and Ironing type "All sold surfaces", the preview of Ironing moves shows that the printer will NOT be ironing where the letters will be in the next layer.  This tends to cause a bit of bumpiness around the letters and isn't desirable.

Is there a way to FORCE a full layer ironing (it is a fully solid filled surface)?

Thanks!

Here you can see that the filament under the lettering will not be ironed.  I'm trying to get a full ironing pass under the lettering without lifting and skipping over the letter area.  That lift tends to produce little zips on the print, which are then right up against the letters and difficult to impossible to remove or make look good.

Also, tried with global ironing instead of range-limited with similar result.  Also noticed a possible bug here, ironing moves are NOT listed as available to select in the preview when using Range-modifiers!  Bug team--do I need to file a ticket for this on Github?

it's not a bug

@astrobirder

In this .3mf Ive shown you a way to get the ironing done as you wanted, all the changes to the model were made in slicer, aside from the first layer height I did not change any of the other settings, and some of them are questionable to me.

I did not do a test print, but the setup seems like a nozzle clogger to me.

I'm curious to know how the print turns out.

Good Luck

Hello @SwissCheese.

The file is not available. Could you explain what you did?

This is now the top search result for 'full layer ironing', I too would like to know what was done

Is it custom G-code for a particular layer?

Thanks!

Hi,

meanwhile I managed to get it working. In Prusa Slicer 2.4.0 you can add a

  • range modifier
  • add a ironing setting
  • and select the "ironing Type" property
  • and set the ironing type to "all solid surfaces"

In the example below the surface underneath the letters is completely ironed before the letters are printed on top. Without this setting the ironing was only done to the edges of the letters, which looked awful.

RE: Force full layer ironing in mid-print

@jsengineering is correct at the time I prepared the original file for @astrobirder the feature did not work in 2.3 and a workaround was needed, the forum admins deleted all the files shortly after that so there was no example left to follow.

Sorry you will find this with many posts here now, but the feature works as intended in 2.4

RE: Force full layer ironing in mid-print

Ok, after making the last post here, I decided to do some experiments and found that this does not work in all scenarios, meaning that slicer still has at least two situations that 2.4.0 final doesn't fix, I'm going to make a tutorial for this and add it to my website to be linked here once its complete. it turns out the the original workaround for this is still valid in those cases.

Hopefully you two are good for now and I will post at my leasure.

RE:

Hi! there still no updates on this topic?

im also trying to get a full ironing mid print to avoid the artifacts of the nozzle jumping around the features of the next layer.

the tips of this topic does not change the outcome, still makes gaps on the parts of the next layer.

the way i'm doing it is to cut the part above the ironing layer, export gcode, and paste the ironing gcode on the previous gcode, that have the full part and "bad" ironing

any easier way? thanks!
