Feature Request: Simple text embossing function

I would find it useful to have a very simple text embosser for marking revision numbers in the top of prints. Sometimes the tweaks to make things are so small that it is very hard to tell the difference between different test parts.

I would envision:

  • text string
  • font size
  • emboss depth from the top layer down
  • maybe even font type (choice of only a few?)

Thanks,

George

Hi George,
this seems like a decent idea.
I think you need to extend it to describe where you would place the information...  (possible placed by Mouse manipulation. )

Could you please raise this on the Prusa Slicer Github page, where the Developers lurk?

Most of the Moderators here are not Prusa Staff,    adding the info on Github, allows you to express your idea fully with the people who are working on the software.

@joantabb

Hi- yes on the placement! I meant that but didn't articulate that at all - I should have 🙂

I went to github first when i thought of this, but there are only an "Issues" section, so I wasn't sure if feature requests would be welcome there. Opinion?

Regards, George

@gny

They count Feature Request as an issue.

There is already a similar issue on Git hub, the guy was looking to add a recycling symbol. Post here if you can't find it.

It certainly would be nice to incude the name of the GCode file. (especially as PS allows you to create a GCode file name that incudes, material and print settings etc.)

@gny

Is the slicer the right place for this?

It's straighforward to include text in the source file which is where the changes are made and copying them to the surface of the model can be automated; there is a good chance that leaving this until slicing will leave room for sequencing errors.

@towlerg

Adding the SPI recycling code at slice time does make more sense as that is when you set which plastic is to be used.  I have been incorporating it into the source file as above.  See attached photo.

Your comment led to me experimenting:  If you right click on a part in the slicer you can add a modifier, the modifier can be another object, a line of 3d text as an STL for example; then with the modifier's layer and perimeter settings all set to zero it turns into a cut-out that you can place as you wish.

So, if you make a set of numerals you could load (a selection of) them as parts and apply a serial number as you slice.

Hmmmm.  Or you could give the modifier a different (colour) filament in the MMU or as a 'Manual MMU'  print.

Cheerio,

One more vote that this is not a slicer issue.  Plus, Meshmixer Tinkercad Fusion and most other CAD tools have this ability, and the CAD tool is the right place to modifier parts this much. The slicer should slice, not design.

I agree, it is not a slicer issue - CAD tools are much better at doing text.

But a general subtraction tool in the slicer would be appreciated - symbols and text could then be pre-made in the CAD tool and used in the slicer as @diem points out. I know it can be done now by setting all extrusion parameters to zero for the part, but an easier way would be nice.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉
