Extrusion Width while printing Extrusion Multiplier?

When i print a .4 extrusion multiplier cube, it sounds obvious but my extrusion width in the prusaslicer should be .4 not the .45 width i normally print with shouldn't it? 

Only asking to make sure because my e steps and filament widths are spot on and yet I often find i'm over extruding on solid layers and getting the grinding sound as the nozzle passes over the layer.

First you need to be certain of your terms. I doubt you mean extrusion multiplier. The extrusion multiplier is set under filament settings and is used to adjust the amount of filament extruded. For example a 1.0 extrusion multiplier means a normal amount of filament is extruded. A 0.5 extrusion multiplier means only half the normal amount is. It’s normally set in the 0.9 to 1.1 range. 
I suspect you mean your extrusion width this is nominally the width of a single wall as laid down by the extruder. If you have a default 0.4mm nozzle defined and fitted to your printer then the default profiles have the extrusion width for normal perimeters set to 0.45. Which would match what you describe. 
Extrusion widths are set under your print profile in the advanced tab. You must have slicer in non basic view to see them. I’m not at the pc right now so I can’t check if you need to be in advanced or expert mode. 
Slicer allows you to set different extrusion widths for different extrusion types. So infill can be different to inner perimeters for example.

Hi Neophyl. 
Thanks for your reply. I do mean the extrusion multiplier under the filament settings. It’s set to 1 or some slicers 100.  When printing a .4 extrusion cube to fine tune the extrusion amount I’m wondering if my extrusion width, in the advanced settings should be changed back to .4 not the .45 used while printing. 
I’m guessing if left at .45 extrusion width my .4 wall would be over sized (.5 thicker) or would the slicer calculate this and adjust accordingly.

Sorry I think I’ve found the answer to my question. 

I can leave the extrusion width as .45 I just need to use .45 in my calculations, I was thinking wall width not extrusion width on my calculation 🤦‍♂️ 

 

  1. Calculate the extrusion multiplier using the following formula: Extrusion multiplier = (Extrusion width (0.45) / Average measured wall thickness).

What exactly are you trying to do ?  Are you trying to calibrate the extrusion multiplier for the filament ?

Just set it to 1 under filament.  Carefully measure the actual filament diameter at several points using calipers to get an average.  Enter that actual diameter into the filament settings, check what your extrusion width is set to under Print Setting > Advanced (usually 0.45 for a 0.4 nozzle and then print your single wall cube.

Then take your calipers and measure the actual thickness of the printed wall. 

You could set the extrusion width to 0.4 and print and then see how close it is to 0.4 but practically speaking theres no difference in leaving it at 0.45 and seeing how close it is to 0.45.  You could set it to 0.5 and see how close it is to 0.5.  Its all the same thing.  You are seeing how close the output reality is to theory.

Its at that point you can tweak the extrusion multiplier up or down slightly to get to the target wall thickness of 0.45.  Usually with a prusa once I have set the actual filament diameter I don't need to change the extrusion multiplier from 1.  I find that filament diameter difference is more important to get right.  

Think about it, if your filament is 1.76mm in reality then its going to over extrude.  What makes more sense, reducing the extrusion multiplier to make it extrude less plastic or setting the filament diameter to 1.76 which does the same thing and matches reality so the slicer has better data to slice with.

You should NEVER need to set an extrusion multiplier to 0.4 in any case.  That's saying to extrude 40% of the normal plastic.  So if you did have a perimeter extrusion width set to 0.4 and printed a single wall cube if you also had your extrusion multiplier set to 0.4 you would be getting less than 0.2mm walls in theory, which a 0.4mm nozzle is not going to print well at all.  Basically major major under extrusion.

Yes exactly that.

I've been doing it correctly, just not realising I can leave the extrusion width at .45. Instead I keep changing it to .4 when i don't actually need to.

I do find my extrusion multiplier always ends up around .85-.95 mark though checking. very rarely 1.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying
