Cutting in the X-Y plane

Cutting a model in the Z axis is relatively straightforward.  Is is possible to (easily) cut out sections of a model while in the X-Y plane?

The only way to do that (at the moment) is to rotate the part and then use the normal cut function then rotate it back.

Yes, I had sort of realized that, although it would be cumbersome in some cases. Say I had an STL file of a 4 x 4 array of similar but slightly different objects, on a common base, not individually selectable, and I need to remove one on a corner, leaving the others. Maybe I could add a part consisting of a box with 0% fill and no perimeters that surrounds the one object I need removed? I'll have to experiment a bit.
