Change travel on edge (independent of seam)

Hi,

I'd like to slice an object in such a way that the nozzle doesn't travel over a certain edge. See attached pictures, where the dark blue lines show the travel moves of the nozzle. The object is a case with an opening in front. At the edges of the opening, I want the nozzle to jump to the next layer and change direction.

I am using an ultra thick 1.8 mm nozzle (BondTech CHT) which works really fine with the standard MK3S hardware btw, but the retraction capabilities are not so great so to have a setting like which prevents the nozzle from traveling above the opening would make the edge of the opening look much nicer. I don't know why but in Cura the object is sliced like that automatically but also without an explicit setting. Still I am usually not using Cura and I need a solution for PruaSlicer.

Unfortunately the seam painting feature doesn't solve the problem even if I try to manually paint the seam on every second layer (at a layer hight of 1.4 mm it was worth the try).

Can anybody help or maybe can the Prusa team acknowledge this a as a legit feature request?

Thanks very much

@clschwarz

Try changing orientation, although I don't think that's will do it in the case of a  1.8mm nozzle 😮 holy cow. the other thing I can think of right now would be to use a decoy object to try to change the direction, I use this technique when I need to steer the print head while working with TPU/TPE.

Hope this helps

Thanks - tried changing orientation but unfortunately that didn't do it.

However, I found out that it depends on the nozzle diameter - with a diameter of 1.0 the travel is just like it should be (avoid crossing parameters is switched on) - with 1.8 apparently there is a bug and the travel goes across the opening. The edge of the opening will never be clean if it is sliced like that. See pics below.

Dear Prusa Team maybe this can be solved with the next update? (Don't know if anybody of Prusa is reading this..)

Does "Avoid crossing perimeters" help?
