Can variable layer height be applied to only parts of each layer?

Hello everyone,

I am looking for an answer to a problem where using variable layer height on the print causes the entire print to be slightly smaller around the periphery in very noticable bands where the layer height changes.

is it possible to only apply the variable layer height feature to specific area of the print? for example...keep the outer walls using the same coarse layer height but only the detailed part using variable height such as a cube with detail only on a single face (facing forwards) and flat on the other sides?

similar to how infill or support can be thicker layers than the walls?

would be interested in any ways to apply this methodology to aid in some long duration prints that still have some sections of curvature within them.

many thanks,

Tim

I'm going to answer, Yes, however this really depends on your level of knowledge with slic3r. If your just starting out, this may well be beyond your ability, if your advanced, this is easily achieved.

Thanks for the reply, I have some experience with a few different slicers but if you could elaborate on your thoughts on how to realise this?
