Bridge thread length reduced

Hello,

Can't actually describe this in words, so I'll show you pictures. First set of picture is from an old slicing of some 2 years ago. It shows the layer below the bridge, then the bridge, and finally the layer above that. I'd say it's okay. Long threads of filament in one go should make it stable I guess.

Second set of pictures is from a current run with up-to-date software and the MINI IS printer profile. Project settings have been revised to reset irrelevant values to their new default, and others have been set to improve stability already. But the bridge looks worse. The thread length is shorter and there's more disturbing in the layer above it. I expect this to be less stable. Since this is a critical structural part, I strive for maximum stability here.

Which settings should I look at to improve this? Or should I not bother as it's already good enough?

There are no settings to control that.  The changes are due to the various 'improvements' made to the slicing code.  The only settings directly are bridge direction which you can set manually or leave it on auto.  That hasn't changed but how it chooses to anchor them you have zero settings for in the software directly.

Same with the solid infill. They changed how that is processed too with no settings to use the old method so you are stuck with the new.

I already needed to find and set the bridge direction to 45°, it would normally leave it at some 0/90° which would go exactly along the area to bridge and would have failed miserably. I detected that while inspecting the print plan and could fix it.

Generally, I'm wondering why the slicer dissects layers in so many parts when ultimately it could just fill the whole layer with solid infill. The preview displays them in beautiful colours but in the end product, it's all the same material. What are all those splits and continuations good for? Is that a major bug in itself?

From the multiple issues on the PS github over the years many people think so.
For example https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/6275 or https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/7885 or https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/issues/8818 etc etc etc.  There are many more.

There's loads all under different keywords if you try and search.  The way it does it at the moment is the way that PS has been designed to do it.  So its not a 'bug' as its on purpose.  As to whether its the best methodology or not, well that's up to personal interpretation.  We the user base have zero control over that.  While I have my own opinion (I think it could be better) what we have at the moment generally works.

Given there are other far older and more fundamental issues that haven't been addressed either this is in the lap of the gods, or prusa in this case.  I've kind of given up on advocating for changes.  I just use what they produce for some things, and for others where the slicer doesn't give me the results I want I use alternatives.
