Block supports/layer

Hi,

I am printing a hollowed model and half way up it is trying to add a large top layer inside for no apparent reason. Any way to block this layer, similar to "block support" in cura.

for no apparent reason.

That usually means an error in the STL file but it could be other things. Best way to get more than just wild guesses is to save the project as a 3mf file, compress it (right-click on the 3mf file), and attach it to your post here. This way we can see the STL plus all your settings.

Doesnt look like the file attached. Says max allowed is 10mb, but compressed it is still 20

I only looked at the Darth Sidious file. Yep, as I suspected, thousands of errors in the model:

I wouldn't waste my time trying to fix it. If you're desparate, print it as is and hope for the best. Or try to run it through something like https://www.formware.co/onlinestlrepair to see if it can be fixed.

I downloaded the darth sidious 3mf.  Please note the yellow triangle next to the model.  If you hover over it you will see the listed errors with the model.  Its very broken.  It has 3201 errors auto repaired but still has 43302 open edges.

I note there an exterior island on the lower hood that is printing in  mid-air and will need support. The models lower right.  Notice the island not connected to anything.

If you fix the model through netfab then it correct slices it with the expected infill you have configured in your profile.

Btw that model detail level is overkill for fdm printing, its designed for resin prints.  You can simplify it quite a bit without effecting print quality and that also makes the model /file smaller.  Even simplifying to to extra high detail reduces the 3mf size down to below 9mb.

Attached a fixed and simplified version.

This model is flawed, there are 23,636 open edges and even after being repaired there are still 1355 errors. you might have to get creative with modifiers to eliminate the bridging layer your getting (that's the blue layer your seeing). If possible I would make the model solid, and then try just not printing the infill. As a hallow model your getting many perimeter related problems as well. They will not only cause problems with the outward appearance but will also add a good bit to the print time.

You guys are just better persons than I am 🙂 I see 40,000 errors, I get out of Dodge…

@fuchsr

I'd say we gave that one the old 1,2,3 punch.

RE:

Thanks for the info.

I suppose I will avoid hollowing it, as the errors only come after hollowing in Chitubox. Oddly enough, it doesnt even really save on time/filament as I thought it would.

As for the detail, I am printing these pretty large at about 12-14in with a .2 layer height and the detail is coming through pretty well. I wouldn't want to lose any quality. I can try decreasing the quality on one and see how it compares to the others I have printed. Is there any real benefit other than a smaller file size to decreasing the quality?

Thanks again for the help!

RE: Block supports/layer

If you right click on the model, sidious for example and use the simplify option, selecting the highest quality you shouldn't see any difference in the print.  Even going lower to high would probably not be noticeable but even with minimal simplification in PS the file size is less than half.

The original source has details that the fdm process just cant reproduce without switching to a much smaller nozzle.  They were sculpted to take advantage of the detail resin printers can do.

As for hollowing, don't bother, just play around with the infill options.  For example you could try support cubic or the option only infill where needed.  Even scaling the sidious to your entire print volume will print is less than 2 days with 20% support cubic.  And the material texture is visible even with the simplification.
