RE: Update...(Kind of)

Maybe it's Bondtech's way of managing demand: Make the T-shirt ugly and the nozzle choice unattractive.

Well Gustav has confirmed its 0.4mm nozzles only in the kits. Thats a bit of a kicker.

My neighbours would ridicule at me if I wore that thing in the garden.

I was hoping to hide among the flowers once they are in full bloom.

OK, so it looks like when you order the 8 tool you get 8x 0.4mm nozzles. You can order the other sizes but they are $35 extra.

It's quite annoying. With the (firmware-driven?) four week delay, one would think that they have the time to pack custom sets of tools with each order.

Yeah that's not great, Gustav confirmed that's the situation.
Problem is if I only go for 4, and buy extra nozzles, you only get the hardware to mount 4.
I'm going for 8, and I'll buy bigger nozzles as/when I need them...I know for sure there'll be situations when I need more than 4.

Im still hoping that they'll rethink this before anything starts shipping. Ill get the order in now and keep my fingers crossed.

I was aiming for four tools anyway, since I prefer to keep some visibility and access to the print area, and don't have convenient room around the printer for eight spools. I checked with Bondtech a few weeks ago and they confirmed that it will be easy to exchange just the nozzle.

But then, they have confirmed various things a few weeks ago which no longer seem to be correct...

I saw a YouTube of SMRRF where there was a 4 tool setup in an 8 tool harness. Not sure why BondTech can't offer the same? Or else get the 4 now and pay later for the 8 tool harness (or make my own).

Yeah, I'm getting the 4 now as well. I'll just swap them out as needed.

RE:

Just wondering if it's possible to fit the 4 extra tool holders later, and what they'll cost.  Also what do the normal nozzles cost?  I see hardened 0.4 CHT at 31EUR, but site going too slow to find other sizes and types... 174EUR difference between 4 and 8 nozzle kits.  Or do I need 8 0.4 nozzles after all?

Here's what is include in the 8 tool setup. And to confirm you can only get 0.4mm nozzles at this time

One piece of good news hiding in there: There will be side filament sensors, presumably in the 4x filament guides on either side. I recall that there were some doubts in the discussions here.

I'm curious to see how these will be implemented and connected. Will it be eight separate sensors, individually addressable by the firmware? Or will it be some edge-triggered scheme where the firmware can only see "some channel just ran out of filament" or "some channel just had filament introduced"?

RE: Update...(Kind of)

Problem is even the promissed Prusa dry boxes which should be simple enough to produce (sans the complexity of injection mold tooling) are taking too long. All of my filaments I work with need to be kept dry. I can't have the spools sitting out in the open hanging off the side of the printer nor do I have the space to keep 8 PolyMaker dryboxes (what I'm currently using) next to the printer. This is all moot anyway since I can't get onto the #$%^!^ website anymore to make an order...

Whats a Puck ?

Since the puck holders come in "top" and "bottom" flavors, I assume it's part of the side-mounted spool holders and their mounting brackets.

Well I've got my order confirmation from Bondtech, even though the browser is just hanging since I clicked the 'place order' button.

A mischievous woodland elf from "A mid-summer night's dream"

I think it's that spool holder that screws onto the side panel corners in place of the rivets.

I'm hoping that they are individually addressed so I could have a multiple spools of the same filament loaded and have it automatically switch over on runout. Otherwise, it's pointless.

Something I didn't see finalised/confirmed:

How the hell is homing done for the nozzles? Theres no hardware that suggests anything extra is being added ? Dont tell me there's going to be head banging every time a tool changes ? 🤣

Well, a set of individual sensors, but with a combined (edge-triggered) readout, would work. The firmware knows which filament the extruder is pulling in at any given time, to a combined "there's a change!" signal would do.

It would be a workaround, and a bit awkward when inserting new filament manually -- but I was wondering whether the xBuddy board has any I/Os to spare for individually addressable sensors. Well, I guess they could always get creative and implement some one-wire serial readout scheme...

I would assume that the whole toolhead calibrates its position (after every power cycle) via the usual head-banging. The relative XYZ position of each nozzle needs to be calibrated only once after it is installed, the relative positions are then stored in EEPROM. Apparently the docking mechanism works reproducibly enough to avoid the need for calibration after every tool change.

But I was expecting to find a "calibration target" as part of the package -- I believe the XL uses a pin which is screwed into a thread in the middle of the heat bed. Is there some suitable protrusion or hole already available on the Core One?

Yeah thats what I was expecting too. Maybe it's integrated somewhere.

Intrigued by the 'bed spacers kit' also.
