What is the point of this?

After playing with it for a couple of days, I admit I don't really understand what the point of this software is.

Are there really that many people that are out and about and suddenly feel the urge to "hey, I need to slice and print this doodad" but have no access to their computer? By definition they'd also not have access to their printers, so it would have to be set up already, and you couldn't check the quality of your print when it starts.

I guess there's a use case for someone sitting on their couch watching TV with an iPad or phone in their hand, getting bored and with nothing better to do than slice a file. I don't know. I guess that's just not me.

Wish they'd taken that developer time to fix some basics in Prusaslicer that people have asked for for years: straight line seam painting, preserving your selected viewing options (e.g. show seams) in Preview, etc

Chances someone has a smartphone are higher (much higher) than they have a laptop or desktop.

You can lock down printer and settings to the point it will print by merely selecting model to print and sending to the printer - especially for kids, where parents wants to let kids print toys and not be bothered too much with supervising it.

If you give people in very early in their stage of life certain solution then they will be more eager to pick products from that company later on in the future.

3d print is past the point of being a hobby for nerds, it's entered into a next level of being common product like a paper printer.
This means people demand simpler controls. They got it.

See my GitHub and printables.com for some 3d stuff that you may like.

I think they're just pandering to the 'phone addicted.

Cue yet another slew of damp filament and poor adhesion errors.

Chances someone has a smartphone are higher (much higher) than they have a laptop or desktop.

True, even I have a couple (people give them to me) but I only charge them up when *I* expect to need them, usually I don't want 'phone interruptions when out and about, it wrecks the concentration when fishing.

It appears to be heavily integrated with Printables, it's getting even more important to make that site useable once more.

This is legitimate question and finding out what is the point of this will surely improve the service for the target audience. Which is not necessary you. I print a lot. I am not a pro, but it became my hobby. For me, EasyPrint delivers much more smooth and straight forward experience with printing some models from like work, where running 3rd party desktop apps is not always easy or even possible. And works so fast and easy, that I happened to use it even home for simple models. For complex settings, there is still Orca or Prusa Slicer available. But not needed in most cases.

Of course, I'd rather have the full Prusa Slicer on my iPad (it should be more than capable, after all), but the EasyPrint gives me an "on location" slicing and printing right from wherever I am while having a connection to my printers.

So, if I'm in the garage or workshop and use Shapr3D on my iPad to design some parts of whatever I can go from design to send to print without having to go to my office. And since I have everything connected to my Home-kit automation system I can even turn my printers on and follow the print without going inside. All I need to remember is keeping the filament in the printer and making sure the bed is empty.

So while I wish for more power, it is a great step in the right direction. And I'm not of the phone generation. I'm from the pre-PC era and am as giddy as a kid about the whole 3D-printing "teleportation" magic happening.

This is a recipe for problems prints.  To start any print from another place requires a pre-setup and loaded printer.  Unless your filament is feeding from a dryer it is absorbing moisture all the while.  You might get away with this with PLA on i3 machines but the recent corexy models with PTFE tubes are more likely to snap damp PLA and other filaments will string badly.

Yeah, that "I'm at the grocery store/store/hairdresser/pub/etc and have to start that print RIGHT now" idea is something I have a real hard time getting my head around.

All I need to remember is keeping the filament in the printer

"The" filament? Pretty much everything I print requires a different material, different color(s), etc.

But that's alright. I'm clearly not the target audience, and I'm okay with that. But again, I just wish they would spend equal amount of time just fixing some of those long-standing annoyances in Prusaslicer. Which I think is what got me worked up over this in the first place, not the fact that they developed software I personally don't need.

Maybe this is just a step toward being able to download, slice, and print, all from the printer’s LCD screen.  😏
