Filament Unloading Bug/Defect
Hi all,
I have a brand new factory-assembled CORE One, that behaves strangely when unloading filament.
It doesn't matter which filament; if the system was just switched on (cold) or has working temperature.
- I select Filament -> Unload
- The extruder does its hammering/calibration thing
- The progress bar immediately jumps to 50% and half a second later to 100%
- The entry for the loaded filament (display footer) shows the empty status
- BUT the temperature keeps increasing (obviously to remove the filament) and stays high
- To actually remove the filament I, again, have to go to Filament -> Unload; but now need to select the material (e.g. PLA)
I already talked to support via chat and they recommended to check the extruder for clogging (and clean it) and re-flash the latest firmware. I did both, but it didn't solve the problem.
- Before opening another ticket with support, I wanted to asked whether anyone has had a similar experience or any suggestions?
- And I also wanted to ask if the "hammering" a.k.a. "calibration" is normal procedure even when only unloading filament?
Thank you very much,
Timo

The problem occurs between seconds 12 to 20.
That's actually normal behavior. You should be able to pull out the filament immediately. The Core One retracts the filament from the nozzle at the end of each print, so you're able to swap the nozzle, change the filament and not have a leaky nozzle during the next start of a print.
It heats up anyway though, so you're able to load the filament you want to print next.
Prusa basically didn't plan for users to have no filament loaded at any time.

I can at least say the calibration is normal, that's how the printer homes (since it doesn't know where the print head is). The XL does this same thing. It could probably get away with not dong it, and only do it if you're loading/changing filament... But it's nothing wrong with your machine in that respect.

The temperature remaining high is normal, from what I recall. The firmware assumes that you intend to load a new filament right after unloading.
When you first select "Unload", does the extruder actually push the filament back a bit? (Does some filament get pushed out of the PTFE tube above the spool?)
When you write "To actually remove the filament I, again, have to go to Filament -> Unload" -- what is the situation if you don't press Unload again? Can't you pull the filament out of the PTFE tube after the first Unload attempt, since it is still clamped by the extruder gears?

- Yes. Even with a temperature around 40°C
- Same answer
That is really strange, right? Shouldn't it need a high temperature to be able to remove the filament?

I see. Thank you!
