Constant clogging

prebuilt Core One, a few weeks old, 5-6 days total print time.

After a rough period of initial issues, it's now unuseable.

0.4mmHF nozzle that came with the printer. It clogged a few times in the beginning. I blamed the filament, so bought a dryer, built a drybox, and discarded a lot of prints. Occasionally it printed acceptable prints, but sometimes clogged for no reason I could see.
The last few days I can't print more than a few minutes before it invariably clogs up.

So, idler and extruder gear looks fine. Clean, no debris.
Nozzle looks fine to me. I've had it out, the filament goes through about to the threaded bit. Needle goes through easily after heating and prodding it for a bit.
Looking at print history, the temps seem fine, it's holding steady at the preset temp, and fan speeds look normal, as far as I can tell.
Using Prusament and other filaments, no discernible difference.

At this point, my new printer is broken. Any tips to how to fix it, besides changing the nozzle and hoping it doesn't happen again?

What kind of filament are you using with that nozzle? Are you sure it's a clog and not the idler being too loose and not gripping the filament?

Not the idler, I can't push through even with pliers and 290 degrees nozzle.

I've tried different filaments, it happens with bone dry Prusament too.

Current theory is that the clog is above the heatbreak. I'll try a heatgun and see if I can get it clean.

Use a scrap of pale coloured filament.

Open the idler and push the scrap down as far as it will go - mark the filament at that point (sharpie) then pull it out and offer it up against the outside; this will show where the blockage starts.

Cheerio,

Do yourself a favor and replace that HF nozzle with a normal NON  HF nozzle.

I use HF nozzles with most standard filament types and have yet to experience a clog. Of course I keep all my filaments in dry boxes and the super hydroscopic ones (like PA) I print from the dryer. The NON HF nozzles I use for things like wood, silk, CF and GF. So both have their place. Depending on the print volume and material I can get a substantial savings on print times with a HF nozzle. What is interesting is that for some types prints and filament types, estimated times for non-HF nozzles can be faster.

I use a hf nozzle and only ever get clogs when using PLA with the door closed.

That's interesting. I remember I read somewhere that Prusa recommended leaving the door open for running PLA with the 0.4mm HF nozzle. Of course the door sensor has to be off for that to work so I probably misread it.

The only PLA I've printed recently is the smelly Prusa rPLA: Wine, Algae, Corn and Rice filaments (which are kind of cool BTW) and some wood fill. I definitely don't use a HF nozzle for those however.

RE:

Yea I think the heartbreak fan can’t keep the temp low enough causing clogs. I use Matte Overture PLA  a fair bit and the recommended temps are a bit lower than most PLAs so I think that exacerbates the issue for me.
Ive set an alert via custom gcode which shouts at me if im printing PLA to open the door 🤣

If you’ve got any kind of DIY filtration stuck on the back then you have to ramp the exhaust fans a fair bit for the same reason.
