Super Newbie print issue
  • Background: I’m super new to printing… so here is an issues I’m most likely stupid about… small prints all work great, the large ones though: see attached pictures.
print brakes in the middle of the printing and then…. It finishing it super sideways…. I’m sooo confused.
I use Overture PETG with .4 nozzle, default parameters since Prusa database has this element option. Am I stupidly naive expecting all setting for element to work straight out of defaults ?
second less relevant question: HTF does printer finished broken piece sideways ?

RE:

I can think of three things that cause this but all of them involves the extruder head colliding with the print and shifting to a new position, i.e. the printer loses track of where the head was and continues printing from the "new" position causing this layer shift.

Which print sheet are you using? Is the part warping or lifting off the sheet? If so this can cause this issue. Ensure that the plate is completely clean and degreased.

Which layer height are you using? Try STRUCTURAL instead of SPEED. Try a different infill pattern. Sometimes the head can collide with the infill, especially with smaller layer heights.

RE: Super Newbie print issue

There is a recent thread about such large, sudden layer shifts in the Core One: https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/prusa-core-one-hardware-firmware-and-software-help/core-one-skipping-steps-layer-shift/

The hypothesis is that "There is a current bug in the software that creates a layer shift at fast print speeds with arc fitting turned off or avoid crossing perimeters on, mostly on round objects." Apparently having this option active in PrusaSlicer can cause Gcode to be generated where the print head tries to change direction while travelling at full speed.

Turning that option off in PrusaSlicer seems to have helped several users. It's worth checking under Print Settings > Layers and Perimeters > Quality whether it has been activated -- although it should be disabled by default, I believe. But, as hyiger pointed out, there are other potential causes too.

Thank you for help!
I’m using Textured Powder-coated Print Sheet, I wipe both sides of the sheet with 99 isopropyl alcohol after every print. Using .2 hight and cubic infill. Also using structural. The print was still stuck to the plate lake glue.
looking over the filament I guess the max speed was 70mm and I had it set at as fast as 120 on the infill. I will slowdown the head and play around with hight.

“Sometimes the head can collide with the infill, especially with smaller layer heights. ” - this is soo odd I never thought of it.
Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your help!

From what I see in so many places software is buggy, it is little frustrating for the company like Prusa. Anyway, on this print I have “avoid crossing perimeters” turned on,  I wanted to about stringing situation.
I will slow down print. Also, I read up on different infill, and looks like there are some that can cause print head to build up filament, I will try using infill that avoids crossing its own lines.
thank you for help, the link provided for the bug excellent find

RE:

Did you select "supports" and "brim" in the slicer before to send it to the printer ?

No brim no supports.

Just reprinted with slower speed and different infill, still failed almost at the same spot.
I think I will increase layer hight to .25, and …. Will try without “avoid crossing prerimiters…

Definitely try the increased layer height since this object doesn't really need fine detail. Also, check the belt tension. Make sure your belts are not too loose.

RE: Super Newbie print issue

Did you happen to notice if the printer restarted during the print? As in the panels goes off then the printer goes through a reset as if starting a new print?  This usually leaves extra filament piled on over the purge line.  There's a known issue with large parts and belt static.

You might also upload your .3mf file here [Attach file]  - there might be some hidden problem in your part that is affecting the slice.

As for your print - is the top rim of the part supposed to be level with the base? Or is the rim angled down as shown in the photos?  If the rim is parallel to the base, then no clue how the printer can "rotate" the part to finish the print at an angle; that would have to be a slicer problem.

I increased layer hight by 0.05, make the fuzzy other wall depth lower from.2 to 1.5 - I his was to make sure that head would not accidentally bump into the finished parts of the slope and kept same speed, overall, however I went through layer speed and noticed that about same place where layers failed, the speed was almost 2 times compare to the rest of the print, so I just slowed down that area. I also removed “avoid crossing perimeters”

in result I got it one by 2 prints complete perfectly. Thank you

Tim,

the printer did not restart. The design is angeled nothing looked like it started from the beginning. As of now the issues resolved. Steps taken:

1. layer hight was increased

2. removed avoid crossing perimeters…. Looks like there is bug in firmware

3. lower hight of fuzzy outside walls from.2 to .15

4. After file was sliced went through timeline and adjust super fast sections to more average speed.

printed 2 identical items … no issues.
