Left-handed user experiences.

This may sound a bit odd, but we are looking for left-handed user experiences.

As the filament is on the right side of the CoreOne and has to be pushed quite hard into the Bowden tube (annoyingly harder than with the Mk4, methinks) we are hesitating to put the printer on a shelf with a width of 65 cm. (an IKEA 'BROR'). Right-handed users (like me) can do a filament change relatively easy. But how about left-handed users ? We somehow doubt that they can do this comfortably. Can anyone give their experiences ?

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

I am left handed, My Mk3.9 has five filament rolls, two on the left, two on the right and one on the inside right of the enclosure
I don't have any significant difficulties putting the filaments in.

however I do acknowledge different folks have different levels of handedness...

best bet is to find a potential left handed user, and see how they get on with loading the machine...
It may not be an issue...

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

The CORE One has a side filament sensor, which is why it's harder to push the filament in. But I appreciate that knowing that doesn't help…

Yes, I can see how it could be an issue for left-handed users. What you can do though is replace that short PTFE tube on the side filament sensor with longer one and move the spool. I feed from above because there's little space between the CORE One and the printer next to it on the right. A lot of the CORE One design is great if you have only one of them. Having many side by side, and the left and right pockets become unusable. When you move it you need to look for a new spool holder solution, of course. I feed my C1 and the Mk4S that has an MMU3 from a RepRack using these rollers: https://www.printables.com/model/1134716 but based on your circumstances YMMV.

I'm a leftie but my only handicap is not knowing when my Core One kit ships 😉

I don't expect any problem. Living in a world designed by right-handed people 'we' seem to be able to cope, since we are not extinct yet  🙂

I don't feel placing a spool on a holder and feeding the plastic into a tube to be too complex of an operation. I'm right handed, but I'm sure I could use my left hand to do this.....

Is there no chance of moving the spool to the left side?

Can you post some pictures of your setup if your willing share?

No, not with the way the wiring and everything is routed inside along that swing arm.

Would be delighted but I just left home this week for a few weeks in the south, to escape the New England winter. Let me check my photo library to see if I happen to have anything that might be useful

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

I didn't find a photo of the C1 setup but here's one of the RepRack feeding the MK4S/MMU3:

With the C1 added to my collection, I moved this Mk4S/MMU3 enclosure a bit over and put the C1 next to it on the left, added another spool holder to the rack, and run a teflon tube down from the spool holder to the C1's right side. I could have just removed the short PTFE tube and plugged in the long one coming from the RepRack but instead I use one of those wonderful twist lock connectors: https://www.printables.com/model/873440  One end goes into the short tube from the filament sensor, the other one in the long tube from the rack, so I can easily disconnect the tube. Okay, now that I think about it, it isn't really that useful and makes much more sense on the Mk4S, where I use the connector to rapidly switch between a tube coming from the MMU3 and one bypassing it. I guess it's still useful in that it prevents the inevitable wear and tear on the tube from repeated removal and re-insertion. I have pretty much the same setup on my XL.

Oh crap, i just assumed left or right would be a choice just like the door hinge. It will be pretty shitty in my case then since it will sit in a corner with a wall on the side. I wish it at least could have the spool on the top, like I have on my mk3s enclosure, that would solve everything. hmmm

the left and right pockets become unusable

I just saw this new "solution" by David Warboss: https://www.printables.com/model/1216115

It may help the left-handed folks a bit, but I don't really think this is a great solution. With the steel sheet moving up and down, for many prints it will block access to the spool holder if you need to access it, e.g., for a filament swap.

Ok, so if I understand correctly your still entering the printer thru the side, just mounting the spool above and extending the ptfe tube to it.

That's right. Seemed simplest. No need to futz with the side sensor location.

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

While I appreciate the thoughtfulness, as a thoroughbred, life-long left-hander through-and-through I can assure you being left-handed is much less of an issue than some people think. Seriously, the only time I ever needed a special "left-handed" variant of something was back in primary school when I was taught writing with a fountain pen. And who uses fountain pens anymore?

Pushing filament into and through a bowden-tube does not require anything like the ultra-fine motor skills required for writing, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

As most of us lefties will attest, we grow up in a right handed world. Despite being born in the 70s, I suffered hand abuse at school. Things like buying my own left handed nib for the fountain pen and getting detention for using it. As such, most lefties have adapted to this world. I for one cannot operate left handed scissors very well as I have become so used to right handed ones. I string a guitar the right handed way and even on those occasions where I have messed about playing golf I use right handed clubs. So loading a printer with the feed on the right should present little challenge.

RE: Left-handed user experiences.

I believe the Core One is (unintentionally) designed for left-handed users. If it were meant for right-handed users, the spool would be on the left, and the right panel would open to provide storage and easy access to frequently used tools like the IPA bottle or bed scraper.

For right-handed users, the left panel is mostly unused space. It could serve as storage for extra sheets and other items, but access becomes somewhat restricted when the printer door is open. Like when switching the print sheet. This isn’t an issue for spool changes, which are done with the door closed. So left-handed users, who would flip the door, won’t have this problem.

Or you might learn how to grab a tool or open a door with your left hand. 😉
It's a useful skill, applicable beyond the Core One...

It would be ideal if the position of the spool could be switched over to the other side. Not only to accommodate left-handed users, but different environments where access to one side may be easier than to the other, or where there's room for an external filament drybox on the left side only. But given the different depth of the two recesses (which goes back to the asymmetric nozzle placement on the Nextruder), that's not possible. So we have to arrange our placement of the printer and maybe some of our working habits to the printer -- not perfect, but an acceptable compromise in my view.

RE:

Same with me - the printer will sit in the corner of a room where both the rear and spool side are facing the wall.

My plan is to place the spool above, where I have a shelf, and feed it in from there. Eventually when MMU3 support comes they will all be placed above the printer regardless, and hopefully Prusa will make some changes so the filament feeds in from above (as per their option 2 MMU3 proposal)
