RE: 6.4.0-RC Firmware for Prusa CORE One

I'm actually reading the release notes now and stumbled across the following:

Lazier homing, more cautious calibration

[...] For unload operations with auto-retraction, homing is still performed to ensure the correct filament removal angle.

I had observed my Core One perform the homing before it unloaded filament, and had been wondering what the rationale was. But that text does not make it any clearer me. Could someone help me out and explain what the "filament removal angle" is, where it is measured, and how it depends on XYZ homing? Many thanks!

Without reading the fw code I'd guess the extruder push force implemented is a function of the bowden tube bend. Having it in a fix position allows to program a fix value. Biiig guess though 😁

But a very plausible-sounding guess! I would never have thought of the Bowden tube angle, but that makes sense. Maybe they just want to put it into a "relaxed" position, avoiding unnecessary bends, to minimize friction. Thank you!

Tomorrow I’ll check it(firmware 6.4.0) on the printer at work (MK4S). I mainly print small parts using ROSA PA12+CF15 and ROSA FLEX 85A.

I just updated an MK4S, a CORE One, and an XL5T with this firmware. So far, so good. The alpha version didn't work at all on the MK4S, but now printing is going well, as usual. However, I haven't printed much yet.

Can't wait to test the XL improvement regarding the auto-retract:

Auto-retract improvements

The auto-retract system has been improved across the board, with particularly noticeable benefits for multi-tool prints on the XL. It now respects slicer-issued retractions and avoids adding redundant movements.

On the MK4, the print head now parks at a higher Z-height after print completion to make it easier to remove any ooze left by the auto-retract ramming process.

The CORE One (not +) is currently printing with this firmware.

Thanks for the info! I'll give it another day or two to see if anyone reports negative experience before I update.

ok, against my better judgement I updated the MK4S and CoreOne. I was interested in some of the features listed. I'm currently doing a print on each machine. I'll let you know how it goes. The XL is currently busy, but I may update that after.

Printed two parts (PLA, PETG) on the new firmware (Core One). I didn’t notice anything concerning.

I've got one going on the mk4s in pla and one on the core one in petg. So far so good.

You're my hero--I'm still traumatized by the experience last time. Let me know how it goes.

There has only been 1 commit between 6.4.0-RC2 and 6.4.0 related to crash recovery: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware-Buddy/compare/v6.4.0-RC2...v6.4.0

@foxrun3d

Ok I did the XL.  I'm done printing for tonight, but I'll probably try something tomorrow.  I had to let my recognizer print finish 🙂

ok just started a simple two color print on the XL. Let's see how this firmware does. I didn't like the sound it made when I first did the homing calibration, but after that it seemed ok.

So the first thing I see is funky first layer. I started the print with an orange PLA and saw a terrible first layer, so I switched to another PLA, and it was better but the first layer still looked a little funky. I'm letting the second one go, since every layer after looked ok. I threw the first spool in the filament dryer to see if it just needed to be dried. I'll probably do the same print with the first filament to see. Another few hours on this print and I'll post results.
Of course `Add Media` button isn't working right now so I can't post pictures of first layer with this post... Either wordpress really sucks(it's php so....) or the person/people running it aren't very good.

And first layer with the second, green, PLA. Better, but not great. I'll see what the first layer looks like after the first filament dries for a few hours. By then the print with the second pla will be done and I can verify tool changing behavior is good with this new RC on the XL. I do like the fact that auto-retract is now the behavior on all three printers instead of just the core one.

The MK4S and CoreOne prints on this firmware worked fine. Have another few hours waiting on the XL print to see how that goes. it's not gotten to the tool switches yet, but so far looks ok.

Except for the XL, the firmware has been working fine on a Core One since the RC releases. There is no major material code differences between the 6.4.0 and 6.4.0-RC2 firmware releases except a commit related to crash recovery. Otherwise, they are the same.

The two color XL print turned out ok. I just started another with the original orange pla that's been drying for hours. that first layer is super wonky. I need to try some other filaments and on the other two printers I upgraded the firmware on to see if it's just the XL.
