Heartbreak Maxtemp Error?

Hey everyone,

I recently just finished building my Prusa CORE One Kit. I started doing the printer wizard testing and past the xyz calibrations. The heat bed also passed. But the extruder did not. I received this error message on the screen.

Has anyone ever received this error message and do you know how to fix it?

Turns out that, while the prusa.io link in the error message is not working, there is a combined help page on this issue for various printer models:
https://help.prusa3d.com/article/heatbreak-maxtemp-error-26212-mk4s-13212-mk4-27212-mk3-9s-21212-mk3-9-31212-core-one_405829

I'm happy to find that it agrees with what I suggested above. 🙂

Well, the error message gives a troubleshooting hint. It seems that the printer is getting invalid readings from the thermistor on the heatsink. (Which suggest that the heatsink is too hot -- but that's probably not the actual cause; rather the thermistor is not properly connected or is broken.)

I would start by removing the little panel on the Nextruder which covers the LoveBoard connectors, and check that the NTC connector is actually plugged in and properly seated -- see step 6.49 of the build instructions.

If that's all good, do a careful visual inspection of the NTC's cable for damage. If you have a multimeter, unplug the NTC from the LoveBoard and measure the NTC's resistance. It should be around 100 kOhm according to the spare part description. If you measure an open circuit instead, it might be a bad or torn connection covered by the heatshrink sleeves midway on the cables -- give them a careful tug.

Fixing a wire broken at the heatshrink sleeve is feasible if you know how to solder. Fixing a wire broken right at/inside the NTC element would be worse; in that case getting a spare part is probably the way to go. But hopefully it won't come to that; fingers crossed that it's just a loose connector!

Do you think it may have broke when I tightened it? I took it out and found a small notch like dent in it.

Can you measure the resistance? (Unplug the thermistor from the Loveboard and use a multimeter at the connector end.  You may need to plug two short ends of wire into the connector if your multimeter probes can't reach the contacts directly.)

Yup, it’s definitely user error that broke this. 🤣🤣

RE:

Is it an open circuit or a short? If you measure an open circuit, please double-check that your meter has really made good contact to both connector pins. That little dent may have damaged the thermistor with some bad luck, but not necessarily so.

Edit: Prusa, in step 6.20, is actually more concerned about the thread in the heatsink than about the NTC. 🙂
