How to extend LCD ribbon cable

I am building a cabinet to house my XL and all the spools etc and decided I wanted to mount the LCD outside on the frame.  Dug around on the internet and couldn't find any info other than some people couldn't get off the shelf cables to work with their MK3 or MK4.

Managed to find the actual crimp for the XL's xLCD with the little locking tab here https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/idc-connectors/7185066 and then I used this ribbon https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/ribbon-cable/7193424 although I've found the actual stuff Prusa use here https://www.tme.eu/gb/details/ds1057-24a282r/ribbon-cables-single-color/connfly/ds1057-24a282r-30-5/ .  I made up a cable approx 2m long to test it and all seems good.

Very cool find. I am building a enclosure myself but only moving the LCD panel to the left and out a little. I don't think I will have to extend it. 🤞

Great detective skills! I’m looking to move the filament sensors when my printer arrives next week. You don’t happen to have found the wires and connectors for these too on your travels? If you haven’t, do you have any hints/tips on tracking this kind of thing down given your recent success?

RE: How to extend LCD ribbon cable

I am still waiting for my preordered 5 head semi.

The idea of using the Ikea Trotten shelf (order no. 804.747.59)  (mentioned in XL single head forum), still looks promising to me. As the upper frame is made of steel, you could use acrylic sheets with integrated magnets. So you could easily remove the panels if you need access to the XL. On the other hand, you will have to extend the Trotten shelf at the back if you align the front of the XL, as the Trotten shelf is just deep enough to offer enough room for the feet of the XL.

Also insulation maybe a problem, as the metal frame and bottom of the Trotten will act a a big cooler. A sheet of wood or ceramic tile might help with this. But you will probably have to test it, if it really is a problem. At the moment I am not going to print high temp materials as nylon and CF. Only PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, HIPS and TPU.

@CleverSquirrel I didn't notice those although not 100% what they even look like!  I went through the self build manual (mine was factory built) to see where the cables went in case I could have reused the ribbon but realised it wasn't long enough.

@Jeggo My enclosure is a full cabinet with storage underneath as I have plenty of space in a workshop for it.  I'll probably do a write up of mine in separate thread when its finished as there may be some useful info for others but this is where I'm at with it.

@Hello: Browser here also went crazy with this picture (lastest Chrome on MacOS)

@dangt4: Would love to see a detailed report about your enclosure. Was also my favourite design using aluminum extrusion with MDF and acrylic panels.
I am still wondering if I will need to have access to the printer from above. With my MK3S with MMU2 I use the Ikea Lack enclosure and I am quite satisfied with this solution. The MMU2 needs often some attention from above, but I hope with the tool changers of the XL this should be very seldom. Maybe it is enough to put the XL on a sliding platform. So you could get access to all its sides by just sliding in forward. Detachable side/back/top panels may also be a solution (attached by magnets) .

Thats odd!  It did that for me when I first uploaded it and thought it was just a weird cookie issue.  But still doing it on mac running latest firefox.

Shame you can't edit posts after a short period as I'd have a look to see whats causing it.

I've sent a report about it.

@Jeggo My thought was I could control the temperature inside a large enclosure (there is an AV cabinet auto fan setup to draw hot air out) and if necessary I could design an air extractor/filter in the future.  Plus I've still got full access to the printer as I can turn it around and work on it inside the enclosure.

Make sure you have a panel you can open on the back to access the back of the printer. It will make life easy if you have to get to the electronics.
