First Layer Extruder Print Sequence

It looks like the XL extruder sequence is set up like the MMU2S. i.e. for a multi-color print, the #1 extruder starts the print first, then on to the next one. Is this something everyone is experiencing and unless I am missing something, we cannot assign which extruder we want to go first, correct?

As far as I know, you cannot set the first printing extruder.

But you should be able to hack around it by assigning extruders in chronological order in PrusaSlicer and then switching the tools on the XL pre-print menu.

RE: First Layer Extruder Print Sequence

Prusa slicer uses the lowest extruder number, on the first layer first, then continues through the remaining layer active extruders.

prusa slicer will carry the last used extruder off the previous layer, up to the next layer, to reduce extruder changes
on the new layer prusa slicer will complete the elements in the previous last layer, and then process new extruder requests in lowest to highst number sequence. so, say your first layer starts with extruder 4, and also has extruder 5 in use,
the first layer will go,
extruder 4, extruder 5, then extruder 5 is retained for layer 2
so the second layer may go
Extruder 5, extruder 1, extruder 2, extruder 3, extruder 4   and carry extruder 4 to the third layer  (if all filaments are in use on layer 3,

the sequence will be
E4, E1, E2, E3, E5   If the next layer only has say E2 and E3.
the slicer will change from E5 to E2, then print
E2, E3
and carry E3 to the next layer... etc.

RE: First Layer Extruder Print Sequence

This is an insight that I've been looking for. I have been trying to put some small text into the first layer and becoming frustrated when the body of the object is put down first and the text becomes an after thought. When I sliced the model I just selected the tools that I had the colors loaded up for. I will try this experiment again and prioritize the first nozzle color to be the text. Fingers crossed.

Thanks. This hopefully will help with me too - same issue: printing text on the first layer. But shouldn't this be a selectable option in PrusaSlicer?!

At least for the first layer set the start extruder would be nice...or even let us override the complete order of extruders for the first layer...
this way the other layers can be optimized as it is now, but for such specific cases (and this is where the XL shines!) it would be really nice...

To shift always all filaments around just because the color/material is in the wrong order is somehow...frustrating, when having such a nice tool changer 🙂

Have a look on the Git hub Pae, this has probably been requested already, if not, making the request there is more likely to catch the developers attention
